Hi All,

Can anyone who has experience of repeat mating please help?

Can you get a better litter secnd time around or is it pot luck?

HI

I dont see why you  would get a better litter second time around, why would you think this?

You could use the same parents and get different colours in the litter. Depending on breed naturally. Different coat types as in rough or smooth again depending on breed But I wouldnt say you would get a better puppy from the same breeding. That is just luck I suppose

Hi

Thanks for your reply.  Some people have said you can get a better litter and some say not.  I am mating my bitch again and I have decided on a stud but it was lingering in the back of my mind whether I should use the same dog as I got a very good litter last time.

Hi Wendy

I think there's a lot of pot luck involved - I certainly know of at least two different matings which were repeated (one of which was done actually done 3 times) and they were exceptionally successful but having said that I know of several others which failed to produce the same qualities originally achieved :)

I don't think I would do a repeat no matter how good the first progeny as it's not "moving forward" - but that of course is personal opinion only and to a degree would be breed specific (i.e. depending on size of gene pool)

regards, Teri  :)

Pot luck, it is just like increasing the size of the litter you ahd first time.

I generally don't agree with the practice in numerically small breeds especially.

If the first litter was really good chances are that people will be wnating to get something as good which may or may not ahppen, but will mean that there will be more of the smae genes going into the gene pool.

I did a repeat last year and the pups are different than first time but share the various traits of the first.

I don't think that you should use the same stud dog everytime, but I think that if teh puppies are exceptional then I would go for it.  Some say that the more litters the bitch has the better the later puppies are.  I dunno about that but if you are getting great produce then why not

"The more litters the bitch has the better the later puppies are ... "

Interesting one - can't say that I've ever heard that one and there is no reason at all why it should be true.  Sounds like a puppy farmer's excuse to me!!

I had a reasonably succesful first litter and repeated the mating.I had a fabulous second litter, much better than the first, two excellent bitches and  two excellent dogs, whereas the first litter had one excellent dog and bitch.I would not have repeated the first mating mating if it had been mediocre.

I think this one depends on so many factors. I wouldnt rule it out or in. If we find a combination that works ie daughters of A seem to suit dog B then we do that combination a fair bit. If a mating gives a good litter then a repeat is worth considering. I know of one mating that was ok - gave a Ch, but the breeder thought it wasnt as good as she had hoped so did the repeat and produced a future breed record holder - but it isnt always as good as the first time.
As with most breeding it depends on what genes you are throwing in, but mother nature always has a spanner to throw at you.

Pot luck I'm afraid - my boy was a repeat mating but he's the only CC winner - though in my unexpert opinion some of the others I've seen, or seen pictures of looked pretty gorgeous too! :-)
