Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Dalmatians - any experience?
- By Nikita [gb] Date 09.05.06 11:16 UTC
No, I'm not getting one - well, not quite anyway :)

If it ever goes to plan, I'll be moving up to Yorkshire this summer.  Early next year, my friend will be moving in with me - and she wants to get either a dalmatian or a greyhound, and I think she's edging towards the dally.  No problem for me - who could refuse a dally pup after all? :D

But, I do want to make sure it'll get on with mine if she does get it.  Quick recap of my dogs - Remy, male dobe, 3 yrs; Opi, rott X GSD, almost 3 yrs, both neutered.  By the time my friend moves in, I'll also have either a female dobe or a malinois (unsure which sex) - or possibly both!  They'll be adults, I can't cope with a pup myself just now.  All the dogs will be sleeping downstairs (my cats have the upstairs and they do NOT like dogs), if that makes any difference.

So, given that scenario, what gender dally would be best?  I assume it'll be neutered either way, as the dogs she has at the mo (staying with family when she moves) were both neuetered soon after they came home, as were the dogs she's had in the past.  Any other tips would be welcome - it's going to be absolute chaos I dare say, but harmonious chaos would be nice!!

Don't know about the Dalmation bit, Jeangenie will :) but just to say take care with Malinois especially if you are getting an adult as many Malinois of either sex do NOT get on with dogs they do not know really well. Pups are accepted by mine no problem if I buy one in, but it took the best part of 2 years for them to tolerate my friend's dogs that we see every week.

Thanks for that - I'm still at the newbie researching stage for the malinois!  darnit, I'll just have to wait till I'm in a better position for a pup then :)

Lindsay - sorry, I'm a clean-lines dog kind of person!!  The tervs are gorgeus dogs, but I like the smooth, lean look :D if only I could achieve it myself... :p

And Jeangenie, thanks for the tip - will prolly suggest (politely of course!) that she get a bitch pup then.  Remy is ever so good - he's only ever had issues with one male collie (who he still hates, bafflingly) and boxers, but he seems to be over that now - he was trying to get a huge male to play earlier!  But I do want the best chance of happy lives, especially as I have no idea how long my friend will be living with me!  I'm pretty sure the pup would be fully mature before she moves out though.

One thing with dals, both male and female, is that if they grow up in harmony with other dogs then they tend to be friends forever - they have very long memories! However if when they meet a strange dog they have a spat then it's quite likely they'll always hate that dog, and maybe even the whole of that breed. :D

LOL @ Nikita!!

Have you met Banya? I can't remember.
I love furry dogs, as long as it's sensible. My first Terv was nothing like as "hairy" as my current one who has loads of coat. I actually prefer slightly less coat as it's more practical but still like long hair ... I realise of course your preference is smooth or short coat, thinking of Rotts and Dobes...;)

If you do get a Malinois, make sure you know what you are getting as some of the working bred ones have an interesting pedigree :P

Male dals can be dodgy with other males - but then males of all breeds can be dodgy with other males - it's the 'nature of the beast'! Personally I prefer bitches - of all breeds ... :)

Sorry - not a lot of help, really!

Ooh interesting! :P

Why a Malinois, why not a nice furry Terv? :D

And it's a good job we do all have our own preferences, or we'd all have the same breed. :)

Seriously, I really like all the four Belgians and could imagine having any of them, but the "naked" ones were the ones I got to know first and that's simply why it happened this way for me. :)

Yes, I know what you mean - I'd love all 4 too!!! :P

My first intro was via the Jack book - sob!! - to the Groenendael, then I met Marcelle via a friend and saw her 2 Terv boys and that was it - my life changed forever - I was in love  I didn't meet any Mals til quite a bit later.

(Sorry Nikita, hijacking your thread a bit!!)

Oh, I don't mind :D

I think I met Banya by proxy - was standing next to whoever you were talking to at the time!!  Not met her properly though.  Maybe one day if we end up at college at the same time!!

I've spoken to someone about malinois (that's basically the sum of my research so far... lots to learn!), they suggested I look at show lines because of the drive and me working full time.  Suits me - I like high-drive dogs - have you met Opi?? :p - but I need to be able to cope with the dog and work at the same time.

I'm trying my damndest to get a house with a big enough garden so I can set up agility stuff.. that should help... :D

Nikita if you ever want any info about Malinois, show lines, working lines, breeders, litters available or planned etc, or whatever, feel free to PM me.

Thanks Goldmali, I'll hold you to that :D I certainly don't want a repeat of Remy and Opi - they were both impulse buys (I know, I know...), and Remy especially caused a lot of grief - even for a dobe he's been a lot of work and is still very willful at times, so I want to know what I'm letting myself in for with a Malinois!
