I never realised there were still people out there who are outwardly intelligent but come out with THE MOST idiotic statements when you think they should know better!  Let me explain....

I was in town today and I ran into an old friend of mine and his mother.  Haven't seen eachother for a few years and they were asking me what dogs I had now, etc.  When I said I had two Pharaoh Hound bitches, a Border Collie bitch and a Border Collie dog his mother said something that left me stunned.  She asked what I did when my bitches came into season.  Before I could answer she said (and I quote) "Because if your BC dog ever got to one of your PH bitches it'll ruin her for life.  She'll never breed pure after a cross-bred litter"   My poor mate was, by this time, looking at me with a "I'm so very sorry - I know she's totally insane but I have to live with her so don't say anything" expression on his face! LOL

I can kind of understand someone saying this who knows nothing about dogs, but this woman used to show and has bred and owned several Champions!!   She just waffled on and on and even now I couldn't tell you what else she said as my brain was trying to come to terms with it all. LOL  In the end I just said it was nice to meet up with them again but I had an appointment to go to :D

I can't beleive people can believe such rubbish.  Surely they don't think that all the children they have belong to their first husbands if they divorce and remarry, or what is the point in mating a bitch to a different stud dog on her next littter, if somehow the first mate would have soem bearing on the result?????

Maybe she's gone a bit senile .... crumbs, let's hope so :P

I too once had the very same thing said to me, long, long ago, it obviously is something that was bantered around in that era, who, what or where? the heck it came from I guess we will never know, but I certainly have heard it myself too.

I heard the same from a neighbour of mine recently :( I soon put her straight, thankfully. In fact I think the way I laughed so much at first made her realise just how stupid she was. Another neighbour won't be convinced though Mind you, she won't even believe that if a black man and a white woman have a child together, and then the mother has another child by someone who is white then the 2nd child won't be coloured! Some people :D

yes - on another dog forum there was a heated discussion on the theory that breeds that are traditionally docked have shorter 'natural' tails than undocked breeds the 'logic' being that generations of docking affects the length of the tail - one person even said that she could see the indentation on her dogs tail where it should have been docked

heard a few over the years, most common one the bitch has to have a litter before being spayed.  My bitch has 10 nipples so that is how many pups she is going to have. You must buy the first born as it is the most determined as it managed to fight its way to the front. never buy the last born as it will always have a inferiority complex. And from another forum. my docked terrier hates men with beards to it must of been a bearded vet that docked her.

I was told the same by a couple I was Nanny to in the late 70's,their Dalmation had been "got at " by a collie from the farm on their estate,they had the pups destroyed at birth which I thought was cruel and the dog spayed as she could no longer have a pure bred litter in the future,I couldn't understand why at the time and didn't want to show my ignorance by asking.I  had forgotten about this till I read this thread. I didn't see how anyone would know your dog had had a mongrel litter when you next came to mate her, no genes would be involved in any future litters.

I have recently heard of someone picking a dachsie pup instead of a stud fee and now knows she has a cross breed and found out that after her dog was bred to the bitch and went home they had a visit from a relative with an intact Staffie cross and at some time he has also mated with the bitch. Out of 5 pups there were 3 dachsies and 2 crosses they now know as they have matured.,she picked hers based on the fact that this was the only cream and always wanted a cream.It looks like a cream staffie and nothing like a dachsie. She has been given the stud fee but doesn't wish to give up the pup.

I heard this old wives tale too, years ago when I was a young girl, and it was something my mother took as being gospel! It was only as I got older that I realised it was a bit, ermmmm daft ;)

Think this must have been a world wide tale as I remember it to. I think I know people who still believe it also :-)
