Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Lab got me puzzled
- By charmedagain [gb] Date 03.05.06 00:13 UTC
Ok so my lab came out of heat over a week ago, Well her vulva has not gone back to normal it is still slightly swollen.

She bled for the whole of her season, she has not been near another dog the only time i left her was when i went into town and my partner was still home and he let her in the yard but says he kept a close eye on her, i was only out 30mins so i know there is noway she could be pregnant as i am sure he would have seen a dog come into the yard or jump over the fence.

Is this normal or is there something wrong with her, she seems fine and is eating well apart from she eating more which is not unusual for her as she has days like that.#

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

When did her season start and was this her first season.

If it is less than about 4 weeks then slight swelling is normal as it subsides gradually.

If this was a first season she will not ever likely be as small in her vulva as prior to puberty, unless she is spayed, when it will usually shrink to infantile proportions.

HI thanks for the quick reply.

This is her first heat well She had a slight bleed for about 7days then just stoppped completely, Then about a week later she came back in and this time she was bleeding really heavy, If she shook her body it went everywhere, She was swollen to the size of a golf ball maybe a little bigger.

all in all counting the week she been out of heat for its been nearly 5 weeks, Her vulva is still a little swollen and my german shepherd bitch keeps trying to mount her.

She is being a real pain at the moment really in ya face wanting to be cuddled all the time.

It sounds like she had a false start to her season (not uncommon) so she really is only just coming to the end of a proper 3 week season.  I would keep her safely away from any male dogs (on lead road walking only) for another week, by which time the vulva should have lost that puffy open look, and be firm and closed.

I have often had the girls continue to hump each other even a few weeks after they finish, but there is no way they would let a male :D
