My brother has a two year old border collie and he has just phoned me to ask if any of my dogs have ever had fits.  Apparently a short while ago, he was in the kitchen, dog was in the hall, and he heard her yelping.  He rushed through to find her lying on her side, twitching (as if she were dreaming), frothing at the mouth and she had wee'd and poo'd (a little).  She came to, very quickly, and is now behaving normally.  He phoned the emergency vet and he has advised to get her to her usual vet tomorrow first thing tomorrow.  My question is, has anyone else experienced this and does it sound like a fit?  The vet also said it could be a 'one off' experience.

It sounds very like a fit, but there are many possible causes - it could indeed be a one-off. It's a matter of Wait And See. This link will give you some handy information. The important thing is to try not to worry - I know it's easier said than done! Even if your dog does go on to have more fits it's not the end of the world and she can still live a full, long, happy, healthy life. Good luck. :)

Yes it does sound like a fit .
I had a Rough collie who had fits starting at 7yrs he went to the bridge last August at the ripe old age of 15 and half.

If your brother is waiting until tomorrow tell him to keep the dog in a dark room keep her quiet and relaxed no flashing lights they do tend to drink a lot after a fit so make sure she has plenty of water . She will tend to sleep deeply for a good while but this is quite normal .
We would recognise the onset of a fit by ear twitching and staring into space .
They only last a few second but if feels like a lifetime . Remember that the dog will not recognise anyone when she is fitting or after a fit and some can become snappy some dogs have been known to bite thier owner so tell your brother to beware.
I must admit I am surprised the vet didnt want to see him immediately?

Thank you all for your replies.  Yes, Roni, I too was surprised the vet didn't want to see her straight away.  She's going first thing in the morning.  I've spoken to my brother since and he says she's acting normally and wanting to play but he's trying to keep her calm.  Once again, thank you all.

Yes, between fits they are absolutely normal. :) It's unlikely the vet will find anything wrong with her - just as it's not possible to detect that someone's had a dream during the night. If she goes on to have further fits in the future it's unlikely the vet will prescribe any medication if they're as infrequest as once a month. It's only when they occur several times a week that the medication route is begun. So treat her as normal, because she is!

Remember, fits can be induced in all dogs - it's only a problem when an individual has a lower-than-usual threshold. :)

My rough collie had his first fit and was checked over by the vet she sent us for a scan turned out he had fluid on his brain pushing it to one side he was prescribed pheno and  pred to take away the fluid .
He was fine had no other problems when his first fit occured .
If my boy hadnt had the scan we definitely would have lost him with the build up of fluid on his brain there was no other way they would have detected it so I am definitely 'for' finding out the cause of the fits rather than hoping he didnt have another one.
I was informed by my vet that his scan results apparently have been used to teach students in the teaching Hospitals .
He was on medication for the rest of his life another 8 and half years one dog I was very glad I insured.

border collies have alot of epilepsy in some lines
your brothers is about the right age to start fitting :(

it could be a one off,but then again ,sadley ,it might not be :(

my lab had a fit when he was just over 2 years old. i took him to the vet and my vet said that sometimes if a dogs body temperature gets a bit high, they can have a mini-fit which is what my boy had. he hasnt had any since, so try to think positive, it may not all be bad.
