Does anyone know how I would go about cooking lamb heart? My boy loves it raw with his meal a couple of times a week, so I thought I'd try cooking some to use at ringcraft. The only instructions given on the pack are frying, or in the oven for 1.5 hours! Neither of which I really want to do. I would rather just plain old boil it, but it doesn't say anything about boiling...? I'm a veggie so have no idea

I don't think it'll matter one jot to the dog how you cook it :D  You could just boil it till no more blood runs out, but I have my doubts about using it as a treat for training as it's so chewy? Wouldn't liver be better?

I use liver as bait.  I fry it, dice it then dry it off in the oven.  They love it!

I've boiled heart then cut it up and dried it in the oven all the dogs at training were going nuts for it!!

How long did you boil it for? And what about the oven bit? :D

Ummm!! Just until it looked pretty cooked and in a low oven until it was crispy. Sorry I cook for people in the same way very little following of recipes :D

I will use the "pretty cooked" method then :D :D Should I be prepared for it to stink the house out when drying in the oven?

He loves liver too, but any more than a teeny amount and he gets the squits

why not make liver cake - the dogs go crazy for it and it's less likely to upset his tum. It's very easy to make - one pack of lamb or ox liver, a pack of asda/tesco value sponge mix, an egg and about 50ml water. Chuck liver into mixer first and mush up then add the rest of the ingredients - with a teaspoon of lazy garlic too if you like. Pour into greased microwaveable dishes - I use old chinese take away ones and microwave. 4 mins for one takeaway tub. HTH

Thanks for the idea - I'm sure he'd love it, but he has a problem with grains. We've just switched him over to an entirely raw diet about 6 weeks ago and his colitis which we have struggled on and off with for almost 2 years has pretty much vanished!

Sorry Zarah - didn't realise, not cake then :)  In that case I'd go for slicing the heart, frying it to seal, chopping it into bite sized chunks and baking for 20 - 30 mins to dry it out. I do this with liver and it make it rerasonably nice to have in your pocket, at elast it doesn't get all over your fingers.

No probs, thanks for the help :) Might try both boiling and frying as there appear to be several hearts in the packet. Then I can see which turns out best, or if he has a preference. The things we do for love eh :D

I'll take your word for it re: being chewy! Ugh.

I love lambs heart lol........I either grill it or cook it in the oven. A good time to do this would be when the oven is already on, saywith sunday dinner, fill a pan with them, cook all together with some added butter or olive oil, covered, then when cooked and cooled you can chop it up and freeze some for later. it can boil, they tend to stay the same size then, in the oven they do shrink a bit. It is a bit chewy, depending on how its cooked, but the doggies and I love it. They take a shortr cooking time if split in half. Hope this helps! :).........and you can make a nice tasty gravey for them out of the juices!

I boil untill is cooked though and then put in the oven untill dryied off.

Dogs go crazy for it and it doesn't taste bad (well I use ox's heart and I do like heart anyway!)

Edit to say I cut it into small chunks before I cook it therefore making time even shorter then if whole.
