Hi - hope Easter is going well for everyone!  ... At the moment, all I give Rosie in the way of recreational bones are the rather dry, uninteresting bonios. Seems a bit mean really, doesn't it !  A while ago, after months of ups and downs with her digestion, an allergy test revealed that she was allergic to beef and lamb, and to a lesser degree, chicken, white fish, wheat and cows milk. I would like to give her something I know she will enjoy more than bonios. Has anyone got any ideas? Thanks, Karen

Poor Rosie, not much left for her. I make my own beef jerky by drying it in a low oven. You could make some jerky with venison, rabbit or what you can find that she's not allergic to. I take it liver is out or you could make some liver treats. How is she with fruit and veg? Milo loves to crunch on raw carrots, apples, that kind of thing. I know he won't digest much of the raw whole carrot but he loves them whole.

Lori, thanks for your reply ....... I must confess to ignorance with jerky! What is it, and how would I make it??? Thanks

Jerky is thinly sliced and dried meat of some kind.  I understand some people use a dehydrator (you can buy them) - but I suppose a very low oven works too.

If you want to try jerky you could buy fresh turkey or duck and give it a go.  Waitrose tend to carry different types of meat - they often have venison and game birds - which might agree with your dog.

Is your dog allergic to pork?  If not, you can buy pigs ears, pigs snouts and various other dried pig parts.  :-)

Yes, jerky is dried meat. I used to make it a lot to take backpacking. Lean meat is best as it's the fat that goes rancid. You just trim the fat and slice the meat thinly. I hang it over the rails of the oven racks and dry it for around 8 hours. You can google around for more detailed instructions; I found a site in Texas http://www.texascooking.com/features/dec2002makingjerky.htm (lots of pop-up though ) A dehydrator is probably easier but I've never owned one.

I usually marinade the meat in something like teryaki sauce but then it's usually for me to eat. Yum
