Topic Dog Boards / General / kennels and collars again - sorry!
- By carene [in] Date 11.04.06 15:31 UTC
I know I posted about this in September & after that we didn't go away anyway....but...we have now booked 4 nights away in July, and the dogs are booked into kennels. I remember the last time it was discussed the consensus of opinion was that the dogs are safer with their collars on...fair enough. But in Feb, as I posted, Maggie May got her tags entangled in a radiator grid, and pulled it off. Fortunately I was there to disentangle her. :-)
So... I was thinking, perhaps the safest thing to do is leave their collars on but remove the tags..but then they wouldn't have any identification (although they are both chipped and tattooed)..then it dawned on me that their home address + telephone number wouldn't be much use anyway, since we wouldn't be there...so after all this rambling - sorry...anyone any more thoughts?

when mine went to kennels they take off your collar and give it back to you and walk the dogs to the kennel on a slip lead. The whole area is enclosed in safety fencing before you even get near the kennels so i would think they dont need their collars. Ring up and ask the kennel what they do and what their security is like- that will put your mind at rest.

Good suggestion but if you still want them to have a collar then there are collars with buckles designed to break under stress. I haven't used one; just seen them while shopping for collars. There is one on this page http://www.traininglines.org.uk/dogwear_info.htm but you could search for breakaway collars and probably find more. Get an ID tag with contact information for the kennel if you're worried about them getting out. Ooh, a holiday - what are those?!

4 nights in the Wye Valley, actually - near Gloucester, I'm more familiar with the Hereford area, as my dad came from near Ross-on-Wye, and I completed my midwifery training in Hereford......40 years ago...
Anyway, I rang the kennels and they are very happy to leave collars off if that is what owners prefer. So now I can look forward to our holiday with peace of mind! :-) :-)

Sounds lovely. Glad you'll be able to relax and not worry about the fur children.
