I have a halti but decided after reading such good reports about the Gencon to get one and try it on my big boistrous 10 month RottiexGSD.
But I find when she gets excited at another dog or something and tries to pull hard it chokes her like a choke collar and causes her to wheeze and gasp for breath and it doesn't loosen naturally again when she stops.
I was using a halti to stop the pressure on her throat but this seems to work by tightening round the throat and putting pressure on there.
I know its fitted properly as the rep for them fitted her with it.
Do other people find this.
She is well behaved normally just gets over excited when she spots dogs coming toward her.

Hi
Have a look at the Canny collar dog site I have just got one and it works really well as it fits round the muzzel and does not strangle round her neck.
Carol:rolleyes:

I have a gencon and that happens to mine. It was to replace the halti. Its very rare i use it now because of this reason, and when i do i am very carefull and always looseing it. Need to buy a different one just getting round to it. I have that many different collers/leads its confusing.  I have heard dogmatic are good but do not have any experience with them. Hopefully someone on here has one who can share their experince.

Hi sonny,
I have got a dogmatic and it is the best thing ever!! I have got a dobe and fits him fantastic, not so sure it would be such a good design on a short snouted dog ie pug, staffy, mastiff etc. but they are definately worth the money! (if I had had to pay for mine * Thanks Huskygal*)

but it is nowhere near his neck.

I love mine too - much better than any other head collar I've used.  The lead should go right behind the ears - not around the neck where a collar should go, so I don't see how it can strangle them?

nor me???:confused:im perplexed??????

It does go behind the ears but when he pulls it tightens then he stops pulling but it doesnt loosen so remains tight so he starts to gasp etc... untill i loosen it for him. Heres a picture of what he has. I know i got it confused with a gentle leader when i first brought it. http://www.doggiesolutions.co.uk/x282.html scroll down to gentle controller

My gencon tightens and won't loosen but i think it is because my Leo is has such thick fur around his head/neck.    I much prefere the dogmatic.

that picture has it MUCH to far down that dogs neck. it should be up behind his ears.

do you all have really heavy leads or something:confused::confused:

What is the difference between a GenCon and a Gentle Leader??
- By bevb [gb] Date 14.04.06 05:55 UTC
I spoke to Irene at Gencon about the problem, she said she has this problem with her one of her GSD's as he is very boistrous so it will happen worn normally but I could try taking the lead under her belly and then round her chest which she does with her paticular dog to try and stop the choking.
But I can't be doing with all that if it causes problems with my girl worn normally then its not suited to her.  I will use the hati again for now and try to find something that doesn't throttle her.  Oh and yes it is fitted correctly as I had the gencon rep fit it and show me but even he has agreed it is not for her and is taking it back.

Anne ..a gentle leader is more like a Halti in that it leads from under the chin ,a Gencon is a figure of eight headcollar with the cross over bit under the chin and it leads from behind the ear  ..I have one and although it worked well it can slip off over the head so now I use a dogmatic ...much easier
hth ;)

It won't slip over the head if you have the little stop pushed right up, like a slip lead stop.

'Fraid it can and did  ..my dobe backed out of it -maybe its the shape of his head but it slid over his ears and right off the end of his nose

Thanks for that. I use something similar to a GenCon but have a double ended lead attached to collar as well
