im off to somerset on friday with them to my nans, but im wondering if he's done hunting work if i took him out to a field/forest ect would he go for small dogs, cats ect?
he's been in my house with them but i know its different to being out.
His trainer uses a whistle should i use one too? when is it best ect thanx alot for your help.
- By ridgielover Date 10.04.06 08:44 UTC
I would have thought that the best thing would be for you to spend some time talking to his trainer / previous owner to discuss this.
- By daniellemariett [gb] Date 10.04.06 08:49 UTC
i have chatted with them a little, he's coming round today so i can a big chat about everything, as thanx to you lot, i need to know everything. :) can anyone else think whats to best things to ask him? cheers

Danielle - I think you yourself need training - ask the owner where he advises you to do for such training!

ok, and yes i need training on that as ive never done work, thats y im trying my best on asking as much ect, i just cant seam to get people to understand everyone has to start somewhere.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 10.04.06 09:44 UTC
If you contact the Kennel club they will have a list of all 3 types of training classes.

For showing you will need deta8ls of Ringcraft classes, gundog training classes, and Obedience training classes.

Sometimes you will find details of these in Vets and Pet shops, as sometimes there are privately run classes not registered with the kennel club.

With an adult new dog you need to work on your relationship with the dog and train it yourself before you can expect to trust him off lead.  So for tge time being keep him on a lead, or long line for more freedom (A flexi might be dangerous if you don't know if he will take off at speed).

Can I help at all. I own HWV's and work and show them and have trained them for both myself. I currently have 7 ranging from 14 weeks to 9 years.
Happy to help!

havn't seen you much on here or maybe i just missed you. sorry.

wow 7 HV's i would love that. i would love to work my girl but it is a bit pointless around me. tho she does love learning. problem i have is she has no interest in retrieving (except sticks (which i don't encourage)) - any suggestions?

may see you at some shows perhaps?

I am Ido's owner! We have 2HVs and Ido who is a HWV, I show one of my smooth girls and my wire and am also training my wire to work.

Ask away with any questions :)  Do you know what your boy has already done work wise? Have either of your been shown, I didn't show one of my girls til she was 6 and the other was 2  ! But they both learnt quickly once we had found a ringcraft class and got out to a few shows.

As Diane says, what champ shows will you be going to, both or either of us will be at the majority of them over the summer if you want to come and ask any show or work related questions :)

Which champ show are you & Zigana going to Anna?
- By supervizsla Date 10.04.06 19:26 UTC
birmingham is our first then probably bath and leeds just to get us started.
i love wires as well and will prob have HV and HWV when older but don't think my parents will let me have any more at the moment.
any tips on how to get zig to retrieve? also i would love to encourage her to swim as it is good excersise. she swims from walking in but will not go straight in to deep. any tips?

i don't think that ziggi will win anything but it is all fun and she enjoys it. i was really suprised how quickly she picked showing up. only problem is that she sometimes leans too much on her back legs. but if i lure her forward with a treat she a)drools :( and b) wiggles her head all over the place so i have had to stop luring her and just treating her at the end.

just like to say thankyou in advance and hope to see you sometime at a show somewhere :)

anna, and ziggi and pesto

Hi Anna,

I know definatley maybe that I'm doing Leeds as its one of my 'local' champ shows :D

With regards to the retrieving, there are a few simple tips I can give you to encourage her. Firstly just start of with having her hold the item(tennis ball, toy, dummy whatever) in her mouth for a few seconds, praise her for this and make he give it up when you say DON'T snatch tho or you will teach her that hands near her mouth/head when she has something there is a bad thing. You want the opposite, ie a dog that is so keen that whenever they have something in their mouth they actuallywant to bring it and show you!
Also try...
---Start of throwing short distances in the house, hallways are great for this. Encourage her in, turn you back, even crouch on the floor so she comes to investigate you.
---Give her LOADS of praise when she comes to you but let her keep hold of the item, just touch her lots round the head and neck while she keeps it in her mouth
---Do this a few times each day for only a few minutes, HPRs are waayyyyy to intelligent to do tonnes of retrieving, they'll just get bored and start making mistakes :D

Swimming ---some HVs(one of mine included) aren't water babies at all but wait until the summer and get in the water with her :D Seriously! Get her psyched on a tennis ball or cool kong or something that she just won't be able to resist going in after. Kayla dive bombs into the water but Chloe prefers to stand at the edge, barking her head off and will only swim when its really hot in summer and even then not for long!

It sounds like she may be apprehensive about standing, her weight is on the backs of her legs instead of evenly distrubuted. Are you sure you aren't over stretching her at the back and maybe pulling her head too far forward? Both will make her feel unsteady and could cause the leaning....try stacking her in front of a mirror so you can see what you are doing..i do that! Do you go to ringcraft with her? HVs aren't a baited breed so using treats to try and shift her weight forward really won't work long term, she'll look better stood balanced :)

I never thought I'd do anything with Kayla, I only showed her as practice before I got my wire and she's done really well, so Ziggi might just surprise you :)
- By supervizsla Date 10.04.06 20:03 UTC
ziggi is the only viz so i am not sure about how well she does. she looks good and when in a good mood she can look brill. i started to bait (i know they shouldn't) but because i was getting her used to being around dogs and people handling her. i now don't and she is a lot better but sometimes she just puts more weight on her back legs.

i will try the fixating her on a tennis ball or something to get her to swim. she loves water and is always lying down in muddy puddles and walk in lakes.

hopefully see you at leeds then.

i will put some photos of ziggi at ringcraft on my website in the next couple of days if you want to have a look - don't feel you have to.

by the way ido is beautiful

:D well, the problem i have with my bitch is i can get her to stand nicely as i have practiced but... she wont stay there she wont leave my side ive tryed everything but i donno can you help?

right my boy, i know this old owner used to hunt him, he said he's great at it does it well, so then he disided to work him as a sniffer dog at his work, he said they reson he has to go is because of his broken toe the pubilc and someone else dont think hes ok to do it because people dont ,like the look of it, even tho i didnt notice it.  Ive been doing alot of thinging and id like to show and hunt him, ive looked around cant find working classes ringing the kc tomoz,
all im thinking as ive said before hes great in house with pets but if i take him out do you know if he sees a small dog or cat will he try and go for it becasue thats what he does in the hunt? thanx mates and lovely dogs, but im not keen on the wired hairs {no afence} :D

oh if i can remember how i helped my misses in deep water ill post it x

You seem to have the wrong impression about how an HPR breed works - it's used to flush and retrieve game that people shoot (or to flush game for falconers' birds to kill). The dog doesn't do the killing.
- By Wirelincs [gb] Date 11.04.06 07:02 UTC
If your dog had been used as a sniffer dog previously and he is an adult dog, it is unlikely that the dog will be able to be trained to air scent as he was bred to do.If he has been previously worked as an HPR, he will know what to do if you give him the appropriate experiences. Can you speak to the person who hunted him? HPR work and sniffer dog work are entirely different and most likely will not go hand in hand. Have you got access and permission to  use land to hunt your dog, are you able to shoot over him? If the previous owner though he was an excellent HPR dog, why would he then use him as a sniffer dog. How would a broken toe affect either of these duties? Hunting a dog without the correct training and whistle commands and access to private land may end up in disaster.

Just to add to what Diane and JG have said, hunting for HPRs and say, foxhounds, is completely different. In this country a  HPR 'hunts' a piece of ground for the scent of game(ie pheasant, partridge, hare etc) and it then goes onto point when it finds something. The dog must hold the point and wait for its handler to come closer before it is given a command to 'get in' and flush the bird into the air where the game can be shot. The dog then retrieves the game.

- By Brainless [gb] Date 11.04.06 23:29 UTC
Why not go on their website in the meantime and get the detyails of the breed club secretaries to join and get info about breed specific training.  I am sure the KC will fix their phones soon enough :D
