Topic Dog Boards / Health / Help needed on older GSD with cataracts
- By belgian bonkers Date 08.04.06 17:08 UTC
I'm after a bit of advice for my 8 year old GSD.  She has started to
develop cataracts in both eyes.  I've been reading up on supplements
and have found one (for humans) and wondered if the ingredients are
safe for dogs.
  Typical Ingredients Per Capsule:

Beta Carotene 1.6mg*
Lutein 2mg*
Vitamin E (Alpha Tocopherol) 5mg (50% RDA)
Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) 30mg (50% RDA)
Bilberry Fruit Extract 50mg
Providing: Anthocyanins 12.5mg*
Ginkgo Biloba Leaf Extract
Equivalent to: Ginkgo Biloba Leaf1,250mg*
Providing:
Ginkgo Flavonglycosides 6mg*
Terpene Lactones 1.5mg*

I'd like to give her something that will slow the cataracts down as
she's otherwise a very fit and healthy girl.  If this is not suitable,
does anyone know of anything else that can be safely given to dogs?  I
would consider getting them removed surgically, but don't know if
insurance would cover this, or if vets routinely carry out this procedure.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Sarah (and Rhona).

Think about brighteyes drops they have been medically proved to help senile/age onset cataracts not cheap but your insurance should cover the cost if your vet is willing to help

Thank-you MM.  I'll ask at vets and see what they think.

Sarah.
