Topic Dog Boards / Health / Size of our Springer?
- By thejollyboys [gb] Date 06.04.06 20:45 UTC
Our Springer is 15 weeks old and weights about 6 kgs.  We saw another springer of 5 months old while walkling the other day and the other bitch seemed a lot bigger than ours, even though there was five weeks between them.

Is this about the correct weight for a springer pup?

Thanks.

Hi , while I can't comment on the actual weight, I can say that working Springers are usually quite a bit smaller and therefor lighter than the show bred English Springer Spaniel. So how is your Springer bred? If your puppy is a working type, maybe the 5 month old, was a show type. :)

yep i agree with everything what dawn has said, sounds to me like your puppy may well be a working type, 1 of my pups was 10 kg at 15 weeks old although a very picky eater so may of even weighed a little more if she had not been so fussy & she is the show stain springer
no need to worry like dawn says working springers are a lot smaller
hope this clears it up for you

Thanks for your comments guys.  She is a working dog and from working stock, the other springer we saw was a working one as well, so it was just a bit of a shock when we saw how much smaller she was.  Maybe she will have a growth spurt soon.

Hi,

You are comparing your 15 weeks old puppy to a 5 month old puppy?   Heavens!  Of course a 5 month old is going to be bigger than a puppy that's not even four months old - if your puppy was the same size you would have the opposite concern, that yours would be way too big.

Puppies have unbelievable growth spurts - they can look like entirely different one week to the next.  One week they look compact and small - the next week they look like all long legs - the week after they seem to have stretched out all over and look really long and lean.

Over a month of growth in young puppies is a HUGE amount of time - wait until both puppies are a year old before you compare.

My springer pup is 9 months old, and the amount she can grow in a week is unbelievable!!

At one stage we thought we'd picked up a sausage dog, she looked soooo long:cool:.
There's a springer pup that is about a mth younger than mine that walks passed our house and I must say I was shocked at how small he was compared to my pup. But within a few weeks he is catching up and it won't be long before they are the same size. (both working types)

I did find with my pup that changing her diet seemed to help with the weight, Beta didn't seem to be filling her up, whereas as soon as we changed to Arden Grange she took on a whole new shape, it might be coincidence but personally I feel that the change in diet made her thrive.

When thinking about the size of your pup, the best comparison would be to her mum and dad - if they weren't big springers it's unlikely yours will be.
A smaller springer sounds like pure heaven to me, at least your arm won't get broken when lead training (as any larger springer owner will agree, they can pull like no-ones business:rolleyes:)

She was a lot older and up to five montsh they are growing like weeds so there is a huge difference between a 15 week old and a 22 week old.
