I've decided to get a Miniature Schnauzer puppy as a companion for Chloe, my seven yr. old Bichon Frise, but I can't decide whether to get a girl or a boy. When Chloe is in the park and off the lead, no matter how many dogs run up to her she doesn't seem worried, but if another bitch approaches she becomes tense and wary. Because of this, I had decided on a boy to be on the safe side, but then a breeder told me that bitches would happily accept another bitch pup and that it really wouldn't matter what sex I got. I don't want to limit myself as there aren't many of this breed available, but I don't want to make a mistake either. I've only ever had one dog at a time, so can't go on experience. Perhaps the more experienced of you out there who've introduced new pups to your existing dog could give me the benefit of your thoughts on this as I'm obviously desperate not to make a mistake on this.
Many Thanks
Michele

Hi Michelle
I can only go by my own experience, I have two bitches (cockers) and they do fight, not so much now but they will still have the occasional scrap, and I mean a full blown fight.
Don't let that put you off, its probably just my two!! :D I'm sure some of the more experienced people will be able to give you some more sound advice.

Hi, Be guided by your knowledge of your own dog, and not other people's generalisations!! If she generally dislikes other bitches then I would get a male and then consider which one you will have neutered in the future. Small male dogs can be capable of mating a bitch from about 6 months old, though some will not be interested that early.
PS. just to make myself clear, I did not mean Natasha's post when I mentioned "other people's generalisations". Oops, its so hard to make oneself clearly understood sometimes.
