Hi all. Just after some advice. OH has finally caved in and said oui to another dog and said i can pick. Now heres the prob I have 2 cavs who are the best (and a bit like fruit and nut :) ). I'd like a puppy that i can show and I'm torn between another cav or a yorkies. I'd apprepicate some advice on which to go for, what things to look for and tips on how to get there (in the ring that is!!!).  I'm not in a rush as I'm off to USA in august for a hol so will get one when we get back. Thanks guys

Have a careful think of how much time you want to put in -I don't know much about show Yorkies but surely there you need to spend a LOT of time on the coat, put it up in wraps to protect it when not at a show etc.

Yes, Yorkies are kept in 'wraps' in between shows and the coat takes a lot of time ;)

If you want to buy a 'show potential' puppy why not have a look HERE (click on BREED STANDARDS) to find out what appeals, then contact breed clubs and get to know the breed/s you're interested in.  Learn the points of the breed and go to a few shows and decide on the 'type' you like in the breed and then you'll have some idea of who you would like a show potential pup from :D :D  If you want to have fun in the show ring you will stand more of a chance of this with a pup from a kennel that produces dogs that are consistently 'placed' (1st, 2nd, 3rd etc) in the ring :) :)

Which ever breed you choose, make sure the breeder isn't just out for money this can happen even if they show their dogs so make sure you do the leg work in research(visiting a few shows to see which dogs you like] then have a good chat with the breeder and maybe some past purchasers off this breeder and hey prestio, if you like what you hear plus your natural instinct go for it.  Good luck in your search

Hi,

I think if you're looking to have a Yorkie to show you need to do some serious homework.
Apart from trying to get one with the right conformation and type (there's several distinct types), there's the coat... and coat in Yorkies is huuuuuuuuuuge in terms of whether you get placed at shows or not.  Not only does it have to be the right length and texture but also the right colour.  And I don't mean just steel blue and tan! The tans must be graded (darker at the roots then shading out to golden at the ends) - not only that but the tans must start at the right place on the body.  (This is why you see judges pick up the brush and look under the coat).   The steel blue must be even with no striping or spotting of any darker shade and no lightening at the roots.

Once you've got all that there is of course the care of the coat which means it has to go into wraps (this in itself is an art form!!).  They have to be taken out daily and put back in - ANYTHING like grass or twigs caught in the coat (if the dogs are lucky enough to be taken out at all into fields etc... my Mother's were hence the knowledge of coats ;) ) has to be taken out immediately in case they scratch or try and get it out themselves and break the coat.

It's a lot of work believe me!

Oh no! Don't think I could cope with a show yorkie but I'd really like one so I may go for a pet one that i don't show instead. I think my fruit and nut cavs would love one as well.
Thanks for the eye widening advice all.
Sign on the results though.

Just had a thought :)

If you really fancy showing a dog, how about an Australian Silky Terrier :D :D  Very like a yorkie - but with much less coat :D :D :D

Don't know how many are available here but you can look HERE in the Breed Standards -Toys section to find info :D :D

And if that fails there's also the Australian Terrier - look under terriers :D :D :D :D :D

PS. I know both breeds are slighly bigger than a show Yorkie but they're still smaller than Cavaliers :D :D

I have a friend who has an Australian Silky. He has to be oiled before a show, and the oil kept in between shows  It's a lot of work, and a bit of a mess. Nice dog though :D

Whoo hoo...I love my Aussie and plan on showing him when he is older.:cool:One tof the criteria I was looking at when choosing a breed (not that I was meaning to show then) was a low maintenance dog!
I would so say go for the Australian Terrier:cool:

They are gorgeous. I'm thinking of going for another cav as I have two and can at least componently look after them. I hadn't anticipated the work involved in a show yorkie. Although I could get a yorkie or AST as a pet and not show!!!  What  a dilema:rolleyes:
