can anyone tell me the grooming proceedure of the hollander smoushond please, i have never heard of it before, is it clipped,  stripped or just groomed, many thanks.

Sounds to me as if it might be akin to the Pedigree Tripe Hound :D

In which case a 40 degree wash, short spin and cool tumble dry should be fine :D but no it is a breed recognised by our KC :) the Hollandse Smoushond they look a bit terrierish to me possibly a hand strip or stripping knife job but then maybe a bit more like the Soft Coated Wheaten.

Anyone speak Dutch? :)
Actually looking at these I think they used my first suggested treatment :p :)

Here you go, with a grooming section.  As I expected the unkempt look is in vogue

The Hollandse Smoushond are a very rare nation breed & the breeders will not sell puppies outside of the Netherlands & even in the Netherlands the wait is about two years. I think they are brilliant little dogs & a very closely guarded breed !

The breed standard for the coat is very detailed

COAT

HAIR : This is a very important feature :
·  a) On the body : Coarse, wiry, harsh, straight and with on unkempt look about it, approx. 4-7 cm ( 1 ½ - 2 ¾ inches) long ;not curly, wavy or woolly ; a tendency to mat is a serious fault.  Sufficient undercoat to protect the dog from the weather.  A parting on the back is an indication that the coat is too long and soft and lacking undercoat.
·  b) On the legs : Coat of medium length, not dense, pointing backwards, thus suggesting slight feathering.  Fault : a dense and woolly coat all over the legs, thus hiding the true outline.
·  c) On the tail : Bushy, without fringe.
·  d) On the head : This is covered with the same  wiry hair as the body but slightly shorter, at least on the skull.  There is long hair  to be found on the cheeks, moustache, beard and eyebrows.  The eyebrows may drop a little over the eyes as long as they do not hide the eyes or interfere with the sight.  A topknot is a fault, as is a parting on the muzzle.  The hair on the ears is shorter than on the body.

To be honest all the ones I have seen looked as if they were just groomed & not clipped

thankyou all, the reason i ask is, a lady has moved to the uk and has brought her dog with her, she is bringing it to college tomorrow for us to see.

Lucky you, I would really love to see one, they look smashing, just my cup of tea :)
Even the name makes you want to Smous them :p

Gosh you are lucky as the HS club & breeders don't usually allow the dogs to go abroad at all. They are really strict & all the dogs are examined & tracked all their lives !

I think they are really great dogs & I would love one but they will not let them out of the Netherlands. I first met one in Amsterdamm quite a while ago on the Metro when he jumped on my knee LOL well it was crowded ! I didn't mind as I needed some "dog"contact as there wasn't the PP then so my boys were in the UK.

I can well believe they don't allow export registration but being a European Country I doubt they have laws prevented citizens taking their own dogs out of the country much the same as we have here.

They look NICE!! :D

There seem to be different coats - I've seen pictures where one looks like a SCWT and the other looks like a Norfolk Terrier. I imagine the different coats get different treatment.
- By Isabel Date 30.03.06 08:15 UTC
Do you think the Norfolk lookie likie had been clipped at one point though?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 30.03.06 08:24 UTC Edited 30.03.06 08:26 UTC
It's hard to tell - I don't know much about coats other than smooth ones!
I found pics here; click on the links in green. :)

Yes Floppy is quite Norfolkish :)  I think, though, the coat isn't all that different, certainly from the left hand SWT lookie likies.  I think it may look morse so because of the colouring and the face furnishing being trimmed on Floppy.  The links are not green until you click them!  Had me struggling for a bit :D
