Hi everyone

My two southafrican friends live next door to us in oxford.  My partner and I both come from Co Durham in the north east.  Today they had said they have never been further north than birmingham ha ha.  I mentioned that we where going up home in July for a long weekend and they asked if they could come and let us show them some sites.  I think this is a fantastic idea and want to make a good effort at it for them.  The only thing is they also want to visit scotland to so really we have four days to get from Oxford up to Durham then Scotland and back.  I was wondering if you where in my position what sites would you take a foreign visitor to see on the way etc.  I thought about blackpool tower, durham catherdarl, the angle of the north, the light house in south shields, edinbough castle etc.  can anyone help me with my planning?

The Angel of the North is the only one I can possibly see any enjoyment of on the move ;)  I really think you need to persuade them that they really can't do justice to both areas in one Weekend unless they have a particular interest in British motorways and their services when you are too knackered to continue :)

Agreed - it's going to take most/all of four days to do the round trip unless, as Isabel says, you just love motorways and plan to do a lot of night driving :)

Durham and, maybe, Hadrians Wall and area would be plenty - maybe go to Beamish as well :)

Durham is a pretty city, South Shields most def (not cos am biased you understand) and what about Lindisfarne (Holy Island) if you're heading up to the Borders. Seahouses is nice too, but as has been said its a lot of ground to cover in such a short space of time.

Well..... being as I'm from Northumberland, all the places mentioned are worth the time and effort. As is Beamish Open Air Museum, Alnwick Castle and Garden and Bamburgh. As for Scotland, Edinburgh would take some beating.
