Hi all

I posted yesterday about my dog having ear mites and a possible thyroid problem.  She's going for her full bloods on Monday and yesterday the vet gave me Canaural for her ear mites.  I started using it straight away and all seemed well but today I have noticed that the inside of her ear is really red and looks quite sore and angry (she's had 3 doses so far).

What I'd like to know is whether this is the Canaural affecting or irritating her skin or whether it's normal for this kind of reaction.  Since using the stuff she has been itching a hell of a lot more than she was before we went to the vet.

I'd be lost without this site!
Thank you

Leanne

I certainly didn't get that reaction wth my girl, but I wouold contact the Vet in case it is an alergy to the oil or the ab itself.  It could be of course that it ahs loosened the debris and this is causign a reaction.  Have you cleaned her ears after a couple of hours?

Hi Leanne,

like Brainless I didn't see an adverse reaction when using this product - i.e. no redness.  What it does cause is the debris in the ear to loosen off which makes the dog shake it's head more and try to scratch hence why it's important to clean the ears out after using it.  I cleaned the ears out immediately after massaging the base for a few minutes and then a couple of hours later in between using the canaural.

If her ears seem red or itchy simply because she's been scratching them it's probably the discomfort but worth mentioning to your vet in case she is allergic to the drops.

HTH, regards Teri :)

To add to what others have said, very useful for earmites is to first clean the ears out with oil, baby oil for instance, just wipe around on cotton wool, as that will soften the hard wax and also suffocate the mites, should help with the soress too. then clean the ear out carefully, then put the drops in afterwards. :) It can take up to 3 weeks to get rid of and it is vital to do very careful cleaning every day. Somebody I know didn't think it was essential to do it thoroughly and 2 years down the line still has a problem.

Thanks everyone...the redness seems to have eased off and I'm cleaning the ears out regularly and there's a lot less stuff coming out now

Hi, I've found olive oil and a little warmed water is great for cleaning and won't upset ears that are sore.
Gently wipe ear round with cotton wool wipe dipped into solution.
My dog's ears reacted to every ear preparation he was given, they made things worse.

Just do the ears every other day, they then have time to allow them to balance.
Hope this is helpful
