Hi everyone

my boxer is 1 year old and very underweight.  His ribs, spine and pin bones are visable.
He currently gets fed 300g of Burns a day. Is there antything i can add to his food to help him gain a little weight?
I dont want a fat dog, just one that doesnt look like hes been starved and neglected!

Thanks

Gill

Has your vet checked him over for any underlying problems?

My Golden went through a stage like this at about 18 months and looked awful, I hardly dared take him out in case people reported me to the RSPCA. I just increased his food (after I'd had him checked out by the vet and knew he had no health problems). It took a couple of weeks of 3 meals a day and larger amounts, then he started to gain, and now aged 2 ½ he has been able to go back to 2 meals a day and less amount without losing weight and looks just perfect.

To be honest that's what some of my friends found with Burns for their Boxers.
They liked the food but were just too lean and if they fed more of the food the dogs just got the squits.
So no benefit and not able to put any weight on.
One of them found her dogs were constantly hungary - one Boxer even started theiving anything and everything off her kitchen sides.
In the end they swopped back to the complete diet they used to feed and no problems.

Mine lost coat condition when on Burns but soon resolved when changed their diet.

Perhaps try Arden Grange, James Wellbeloved etc and you might notice a difference.

Another thing to get checked is thyroid, as some Boxers can suffer thyroid disfunction.
This is checked by doing a blood test at the vets.

Burns didn't suit mine either, could not keep any condition on them at all, so changed to something else which has made a big difference to their coat and body.

We have had similar problems with our DDB..I would certainly agree with what some of the others have mentioned about getting some tests but also give Burns a ring they are very helpfull. We rang them yesterday and explained about our dog not putting any weight on and looking thin and they sent us out 15kg of food free of charge for us to try..they call it lamb "extra" and you cannot buy it off the shelf. They want us to try him on this and then see if he has gained any weight. If it doesn't work and his tests come back fine then we will then change his diet.

thanks for all the advice.Guinness  has been checked at the vet for worms, he has had stool and blood samples, all came back normal.
He gets the lamb and rice as it suits his stomach better than chicken, i might give burns a ring to see if  they can give us the extra version.

Try Burgess Supadog Lamb & rice for sensitive dogs. I have tried most of the dried foods & found this suits my GSD, who has finally put some weight on during the last 3 months. He is now 3 years old, but until now he always looked skinny & underfed no matter what I tried. I have found that the lamb & rice suits him much better than the chicken. It might be worth a try. If he is fussy, add a few tinned pilchards or tuna to make a gravy. Good Luck.
