Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Food for my boxer pup and boxer with Glomerulonephritis

Hi
I have 2 boxer dogs, 1 bitch 21mths (Lola) who has just been diagnosed as having Glomerulonephritis and a boxer dog 14wks (Buddy).  I really need advise on feeding for both of them.

Lola has been put on Royal Canin renal diet, which I can only get from my vets!!! Just wondered if anyone could suggest anything else, or somewhere where I could buy it in bulk (as spending most of my time at the vets buying more!!) Ideally she prefers wet food!!

Buddy is currrently on Pedigree puppy food wet and dry (at different times). LOVES his food, would eat a dead rat probably. But want to make sure he is getting the right food.......As I have previously fed Lola on Butchers choice and the vet told me this was like giving her junk food for every meal.  Hence I am wary now of these types of food!!
CAn anyone recommend anything??? Or is pedigree ok???
Advise on either or both, would be appreciated!!
Thanks in advance!

Boxermad, since you ask for people's opinions....!

I think Pedigree is a really bad food.  It contains EC Permitted Antioxidants and Preservatives, it doesn't specify what meat products it has in it, listing only "Meat and animal derivatives" and it also doesn't say what cereals it contains, listing only "Cereals".

If you want to give a good food, I would advise James Wellbeloved or Arden Grange:

Like every other food on the UK market, Pedigree is fine if it suits your dog and he likes it.  All EC permitted preservatives are perfectly safe having been well tested in the human food industry to ensure so, not only that but they are excellent at actually doing the job of preserving food ensuring all the vitamins and minerals are in the best possible condition when storing the food, just what you want really :)

Boxermad, if you do a search on the forum, using the Search facility, for the words "BHA" or "BHT" or "Ethoxyquin" then you will find further information about these preservatives and can decide for yourself if you want to continue feeding them.

"Ethoxyquin is banned in the uk to list it with approved preservse is not helpfull IMHO-Jo

Thanks everyone for the replies and all the website links they have been really helpful!!

I originally fed Lola on the BARF diet (which she loved) and had moved her to Butchers choice for a "change" as it was sometimes hard to get all the meat needed (as I have just had a baby).  And wanted to feed Buddy on the Barf diet too!

But as Lola is now on a dog food diet (renal) I feel it unfair to give Buddy BARF as Lola is a real MEAT lover!!

So I think I will continue with Pedigree for now, whilst I check out the others (heard good things about JWB - so think I may go with them) and then will change him over.

Just wondering about Lola really she is on Royal Canin Renal - does anyone one know of another or better one!!
Thanks again
Boxermad

If you have to feed a prescription diet for a specific disease, then I think the Royal Canin ones are preferable to the Hills ones.
