- By ojoj1869 [gb] Date 18.03.06 19:11 UTC
can anyone give me an idea of the amount of dry food such JWB an 11 month old male sbt would require a day.
before people jump on me i know all dogs are different but would be grateful of an idea what the packet of JWB says doesnt seem to be much....
Scales are broken so havent had chance to weigh the dog as that would give me a better idea....only just got him...a rescue..
Not had a smaller dog before always had GSD and Rotts....
thanks

The feeding amounts on the packet are only a guide, some dogs need more, others less. I would go with your dogs body condition, too fat,cut down, too thin,up the amount. You could try feeding your dog more and see how he does :) When you run your hand down his back can you just feel his spine and ribs without digging around, this would indicate he s an ok weight. If you have to feel around for his ribs as you cant seem to find them, then he is too fat.If you can easily see and feel his ribs,he is too thin. Does your dog fit into any of the above?

As for telling you how much he needs,i would not have a clue

Hi

I have a staffie too!

Many Staffies are over weight and owners tend to judge how their dog should look by other staffies they see on the street. Like the other response said, you should just be able to feel his ribs and spine by pressing firmly on him but should not be able to see them.

I dont pay too much attention to what food packets say in relation to how much to feed as they often recomend more so that they sell more food
I tend to follow what my dog wants by starting with an amount that looks about right for a meal and then if he seems hungry I may give a little more.If he hasnt eaten it all within 15 minutes of putting it down I pick it up until the next meal time. I know this is not always easy as lots of people feed their dog beacuse they say they seem hungry but a lot of dogs are always looking for more food. Mine isnt food orientated so if he seems hungry I know he is! However as you get to know him you should be able to pick up on the signs so give it a little time. I feel mine each week to see if he has gained or lost weight and I feed him accordningly.

Im sorry that I cant give you any definitive answer but thats how I do it with my boy.
Good Luck
Caroline

If you are going to register your dog at the vets, they will be more than happy to weigh him :)

thanks for all the replies...we do intend to register the dog with a local vets but it being a saturday when we got him just wanted a rough guide to how much to give him as the packet amounts when weighed out seem so little.....used to feeding bigger dogs....
he looks well now and can feel his ribs but not see them so guess he is about right.....

From experience with freinds with many different breeds invariabley the amounts on the packets are too much, in some cases twice as much as they need.
