I have just had my hair cut and all though it looks nice its not what I asked for. I said I only want the tip of my ears to show, but I have got the whole of my ear showing. I also said I only want half an inch cut off all over and he cut about 2 inches off.
He looked like he was listening, but once he had the scissors in his hand all thoughts of what I wanted went out the window and he did what he wanted.
I feel if im paying they should do it how I wanted it, I wonder what my rights are in this. If it wasnt what I wanted should I have paid.
Any one know, all replies welcome.

I don't think you can do anything once you have paid and left the salon.
I wouldn't have paid if it wasn't what I wanted.
I have had the same hairdresser for 6 years and pray that she never quits !

The problem is that you really should have complained at the time. Now it's your word against his and I rather suspect that nowhere is where you'd get by trying to take this further. It's really horrible when this happens though and it's not always possible to catch them before they cut more than you wanted. Luckily I've also got a completely trustworthy hairdresser who stops and discusses progress as she cuts mine so she is absolutely sure that I'm happy with what she's doing.
you might be able to go back and have it re-cut at a lower price, but if you didn't like what he was doing, you really should have said something then. If you don't say anything, the haridresser most probably assumes you're okay with what's being done. My sister-in-law has a hairdresser who always cuts his take on what sh'e's said. It drives her mad when he does in, but the results are always so much better than what she thought-maybe yours was trying to do the same.
i'm the same as cathh-i've had my haridresser from 6 yrs too-she took me from half way down my back to cropped in one sitting. I go without if she's not available, even though it is an hour round trip for a 20 minute appointment.

I used to be a hairdresser and sadly at this point there isnt much you can do. If for example it was a colour it would be different because it involves chemicals. But cutting doesnt.
Hairdressers are always having people say 'oh about an inch off' but without the client actually pointing to the point where they want the cut to stop at its mostly guess work for us. And at times half an inch, especially on shorter cuts, can look like much more has come off.
Stating you wanted the tip of your ears to show is quite ambiguious, if you wanted the tip of your lower ear to show you should have said tip of the lobes or something similar. We are trained that the tip of the ear is the upper edge of the ear, not the lower.
You can call the salon and speak to the manager, they should offer to fix it for little or no cost, and throw in some haircare/ styling products.
Hairdressers are people too, and like all people we have off days, and some of us need to have very precice instructions on what to cut.
Im sorry you arent happy with the cut and Im sure that the salon manager will try to help. Remember that salons RELY on repeat business and if you arent getting satisfaction make it very clear that you wont be back and that neither will your friends / family. Word of mouth is also vital to a salons reputation.
Thank you for your replies.
I did tell the manager who cut my hair that I wanted only the tip of my ear showing and pointed to it with my finger. When he had finished I told him that he hadnt done what I said he had cut it too short, and he said it wouldnt look right that way. I have had my hair cut in this style before and it always looked nice, now it will take me months to grow it back, and I shall have to look for another hairdresser because I wont trust him again.
Its a pity my old hairdresser moved 100 miles away, other wise I would still be going to her.

Maybe he got confused about the " tip of the ear" :-D :-D sorry that was just a joke.
Hope you grow to like it.
I once had a similar situation WELL worse I think as he cut my hair about 4 inches shorter and it was awful , I mean awful and although I am not an over emotional person I cried for at least 24 hours. Even now my OH and daughter still say it was awful.

i asked my hair to be thinnned,
Wel my hair is about double the thickness of 90% of people!!!!! And even though it was short at the time you could not see my Scalp AT ALL
I have had it thinned before and it looked good.
this time they thinned it that much that my hair stuck up like a hedge hog ALL over and when you ran your fingers through it , it felt like i had a number 1 ALL over. :( :( :( She had used thinning scissors too much and too close to the scalp.
(I do have photographic evidence of me looking like a hedgehog as i got it cut especially for a weekend away with mates :( )
I have grown my hair now and at long last have found a hair dresser that I trust implicitly. I just hope he never moves!!!!!
Lea :)
I find going to the hair dressers very stressful, im always worried about what they are going to do
once they get a pair of scissors in their hand.
For 6 years I went to a good hairdresser she always listened to what I said, and I always liked it when she finished. When she told me she was moving away because her husband had found a good job with more money of cause I was pleased for her, but I didnt want her to go because I knew I would have to find another hairdresser. I have had some really bad hair cuts in the past so going to any new hair dresser makes me feel very nervous.
Thats why I asked my first question.

So sorry about your experiance. I've only known one hairdresser all my life (18 years) and have no idea what to do when she retires!
I've already planned trips back home from uni which will include a stop at hairdressers and me trimming parents dogs!
I was just speaking to someone about my experience and she said she went to different hairdresser in town a couple of weeks ago who made a poor job on her hair and she refused to pay, all though the manager tried to make it look better she told him you cannt stick it back on. This morning she got a letter from the manager saying if she doesnt pay within 7 days they are going to take it further and get the money from her via the small claimes court, her attitued is well let them and if it goes to court she is going to ring the papers, so its all got very ugly.
I wish her luck and I will be interested to know what happens.
