Hello all,
Now I have been on their website and had a look as I am seriously considering buying one of these, now can you tell me how they work i.e do they tighten up under the muzzle as it looks like they are just loose around that area on the dog shown on the website... I know this will probably be hard for you all to describe, but I would like some info on how it works before I splash out my money :-D

lol..Im sitting here with it in my hand, and its still easier said than done to decribe!
you have a 'noseband' and cheek straps attatched to 2 brass rings (I have the leather one) at the dogs muzzle, running through those brass rings is a leather loop (under the dogs muzzle and connected underneath to the rings at the 'cheek') with a loose ring to which you's attatch your lead.
pulling down on the leather loop doesnt cause the noseband area to decrease in size (Like, say, the action of a slip lead), the action does draw the rings in slightly so a wide muzzled dog would feela slight tightening to the sides..but overall its more a downward force on the muzzle (It doesnt exert any force on the back of the neck like the Gentle leader (for example) would.
-does that make any sense?? hope it helps.

also what size are you looking for in the Dogmatic? PM me if you like, as I have a brand new leather one gathering dust, thankfully was never needed. you can have for post and packaging :D

Just for your information: I have got both leather and material version. The leather one works alot better that the material one but it leaves slight black marks on the fur (which disapear after a while) so we use the material one on show days but it does seem to press onto his nose more.
Dog has never escaped from either and they work very well.
I don't even need to connect it to the lead  - he just thinks that it is on so doesn't pull ;-D
Definately a good buy

Yeah thanks geeky girl,
I don't have any worries about black marks on fur as I have a black/tan dobe :-D it will also be a leather one that I was thinking of getting.. but Huskygal has been very kind and said I can have her one :-) Thankyou!!

Thanks for all the tips.... I look forward to trying it out.

The only problem I have with the Dogmatic is with the strap under the chin that holds the metal ring.  This particular strap is the one that tightens when the dog pulls but unfortunately because of the design my dog will, sooner or later get her paw inside it and drag it forward to her mouth where within seconds she bites through rendering the Dogmatic useless.  We got through 3 Haltis in a similar fashion and we're on our second Dogmatic.  The problem is that because she has been successful in biting through head collars before she still persists.  The Dogmatic is by far the better design but just thought I should warn you in case you have a loony like mine.

I wouldn't say that was the dogmatics fault? Given the opportunity mine will do the same and seeing as you shouldn't leave a dog alone with any type of collar/headcollar on its only happened to me once when not paying attention.

As for rendering them useless you can send them to a saddler who will replace the chin strap for next to nothing thats the good thing about buying the leather ones :)

Did I say it was the Dogmatic's fault?

Did I say she was ever left alone for even a nano-second with a headcollar on?

Saddler?  It's the padded material type I bought

Ok keep your hair on

Maybe pay the extra what is it? £4 for a leather one and you wouldn't go through so many then, worth it in the long run as they last for absolute years. :)

If it padded or leather you can still get the chin strap fixed.

As I have already said, the Dogmatic is a better design than the Halti.  My reason for posting was to give the benefit of my experience.  The OP needs to be aware that if her dog decides to fight the headcollar and is able to bite through the chin strap the dog is free to run off ;)  Not desirable, especially if you walking near a busy road.

I assume most dogs accept headcollars without too much fuss but just in case your dog does act up I think it's worth knowing.

Just for info my dog does not wear a collar of any kind indoors and does not wear a headcollar off lead.

Just for the info neither does mine :D

As you said you use the nylon type maybe it would have been better to state that previously, as the leather ones are alot more hardy if treated correctly (as with any piece of leather). You didn't state what type you used and as the op was talking about leather i jumped to that presumption that your advice was in connection with that seeing as huskygal offered her a 'leather' dogmatic.

The OP needs to be aware that a leather chin strap is quite robust but will not take abuse, a nylon one well you said your benefit of experience.

:D :D

I,ve just sent a leather one back to dogmatic as I was sent a size 3 and I ordered a 3L. lady on phone was very helpful but unfortunately dogmatic have stopped making leather in size 3L so she,s sending me a padded one out only thing is its gold coloured she says Sengi will look great in it being a black and gold colour but I suspect she will look a bit of a twit in it :rolleyes, however we do need one and as the lady on the phone pointed out at least people may not think its a muzzle. .
So folks take note no more size 3L in leather.

Hiya,

I've got the gold one for my Dobe, she's black and tan and looks very smart in it.  It's not really gold, it's a lovely rich mustardy yellow. I hoped the colour would help with people not thinking it was a muzzle, no such luck!
