Hi Carol

As I understand it, the bill as it stands going to the Lords says that working dogs can be docked.  However, these docked dogs may not then be exhibited at a show where the public pays to get in.  So that will be the end of exhibiting dual purpose dogs and the breeders will have to decide at a couple of days old which to dock that are going to be worked and which not to dock as they will be shown.  In my mind this is a ridiculous outcome

PS As far as I am aware this will only apply to dogs docked after the Act becomes law; dogs docked prior to the enactment will not be banned from showing.

It's only dogs docked after (if) the ban becomes law that will be banned from showing, not those docked before.

That's what I thought JG, but wasn't 100% sure.  :)

There's a link to the Bill and its amendments here.

What's going to happen at game fairs then?  Does this mean that we will no longer be able to do any of the scurries etc, or even attend a game fair if and when this ruling starts?  I'm sorry I really really can't get my head around this!

Fun dog events, does this mean we can't go to any fetes etc. with our dogs?

How stupid is that?

I can't stand my breed with tails, that's why I kept two bobtails so that they can keep this line going (we don't breed bobtail to bobtail by the way).  I'm not willing to put my dog under a GA to show that it's tail was natural!  Would video evidence be enough?  As you can tell at a day old that they've not been docked and it will be evident that they are not getting on due to their development stage.

Just read the bill so those of us with gundogs should be OK???  I'm sorry but I still don't understand it.  I will not know at 3 days of each which of my pups would be either a rescue dog (of which there are about 5 active rescue dogs in my breed in the UK) or if it's going to be a gundog.  Also I wdn't really and truthfully know at 5 months, although of course it could be going through training but it would be at the very basics then and I wouldn't be able to properly ascertain whether it would be a working gundog or not at some point!!

I'm guessing it'll be as it is in some other European countries, where docked dogs born after a certain date can't be shown. The way crop-eared dogs can't be shown here now, even if they were legally cropped abroad.

Yes, I was trying to explain to people at my pet club yesterday - they were saying 'that dog that won wouldn't have won another year because it has no tail'. I was trying to explain that (a) they usually don't have tails in that breed, and (b) it's only newly docked dogs that won't be able to be shown. Seems pretty stupid to me though - if you want a docked dog for a pet that'll be fine presumably!
