Our pups are now coming up to four weeks old and are doing really well.  I went out yesterday morning, came back and found 5 puppies on my bed asleep.  Another 3 were asleep together under the bed. Another 2 were walking round the bedroom and I finally found our runt curled up asleep in my dressing gown that was also on the bed.  The box is in a corner of our bedroom so is nice and quiet, the room is well ventilated but warm, so why on earth did she move them?  We had intended to move the box downstairs last night anyway (11 puppies all barking and growling at each other at 4am is not good for tempers during the day!) so we carried out our plan.  This morning when my husband got up there were 3 puppies sitting on the sofa looking a little surprised, but since then nothing.  I dread going out now, or even going to bed!  Because the puppies are active now I am worried about them falling off something or getting stuck somewhere. Help

PS Bringing the box downstairs wasn't totally selfish - Freya is torn between being upstairs with the pups and downstairs with us, so we thought this would make things a bit easier, and she has been spending a bit more time with them today.

the puppies need to be in a puppy pen! then you need to let them in and out of the garden at regular intervals.

Good idea to move them downstairs because at 4 weeks the puppies need to start being socialized and exposed to new sounds and experiences. However, yes, you do need a puppy pen around the box to keep them out of mischief! Ideally it needs to be at least twice as large as the box, but really as big as practically possible and escape proof as the puppies are probably getting out on their own rather than being carried by mum. Then you can let them out when you can supervise them.

My friend recently had a 5 week old puppy in one of her litters of shar-pei that could CLIMB out of the 2 ft 6 tall puppy pen! She couldn't work out how he was doing it until she caught him in the act climbing up the corner and tumbling to the floor on the other side. Of course, he couldn't get back in on his own. :D

Some pups are real escape artists! A puppy pen is a good way of keeping pups safe, and you from worrying when you have to go out. Make sure the walls are high enough, the little monsters will use each other as a ladder

Some good deals on Ebay for puppy pens/panels, from companies that make/sell them, and sold there cheaper than in the dog press. same goes for fleece. Every little helps..........

i would say she is moving them because she isnt comfortable in the box now and is making somewhere else for them where she can be comfortable to

Get a puppy pen put a bed that is double her size and leave a part of the pen with just floor no bedding maybe some sort of paper for easier clean

I use a cage when pups get to 3/4 wks old with a puppy pen attatched to it, bedding is in the cage and newspapers in the puppy pen, its amazing how quickly they learn not to soil the bedding and use the newspapers, another tip is to buy a cheap shower cutrtain and put it under the cage and over the floor its easier to clean when you lift soiled newspapers and protects your floor,  I also have loads of toys for them to play with  mostly childrens sturdy ones, i.e. ones that play tunes, baby rattles even the odd playmobile attatched to the puppy pen. Depending on the size of the litter I sometimes use 2 cages and 2 puppy pens, I buy my pens from Croft, you can buy them by the panel which is good.  Asda have a good range of puppy squeeky toys that are suitable for young pups they are only 98p each.
