Hi folks,

Hope everyone isn't too stressed with crufts! Anyway, just had a question about grooming- just curiosity really. I heard about those poor afghans dumped at longannet because their owners couldn't be bothered with their coats in the winter. Terrible. It made me wonder how much effort and afghan's coat really takes. I heard from one source that you should only brush them after a bath and not when their hair is dry- surely not?

Any replies appreciated!

Hi, I can well believe that Afghans should not be brushed between baths. The same applies to my breed the American Cocker Spaniel.

The thing is, dirty hair gets pulled out in the brush. Wet hair is much stronger than dry hair, wet hair has a bit of stretch so doesn't break as easily. So all in all, a weekly bath and blow dry and a thorough grooming at the same time. After exercise, pick out any and all debris the coat has collected, and stress about the weather every morning

Yes its true the hair should only be brushed when wet as it is much easier to deal with and also prevents damage.  I always spray the coat with water before brushing my affies (and they are brushed weekly) and also bath once every three weeks or earlier if the need arises.
