Topic Dog Boards / Health / Bald patch on 10weeks pup tail
- By sam Mickleburgh Date 08.03.06 18:37 UTC
Hello everyone. This is my 1st message and I hope someone can suggest something or tell me if there was a appropriate thread previously..
I have a 10weeks old dog who had a little ring around his tail since he was 7weeks old and since 8 - 9weeks, the ring developed into a 50pence size almost bald patch - looks like someone tried to shave the fur off .  It is very unsightly and as I wanted to show him when he is ready (6months) I was wondering if I can do anything to make it better.  My vet told me to leave it to take its course but we all agree that it is too early for 10wks old pup to get it if it's a hormone thing.  He doesn't nibble or rub his tail.  I saw someone suggested to use Hibi scrub but I can't see it will help as it is only a disinfectant solution  I have another castrated dog who is 7 but he never had this kind of problem before..  I hope somebody can put me in the right direction.  Thank you for reading this.

When I had my puppy vet checked at 8 weeks she had a little patch on her nose.  I just thought it might have been from play flighting with her littermates but the vet pinched off some of the area and sent it for analysis because he thought it might have been some sort of parasite or fungal thing (can't actually remember which now). As it turned out it was nothing and it cleared itself.  However, it might be something you could suggest to your vet.

Hi Cheryl,
Thank you for quick reply and advice. Vet has seen his tail on Monday but he did not think it was anything to do with Fungi.. He thought it looked very much like something that boy dogs get but he also said my pup was little too young to get it really.  He just told me leave it and hopefully it will sort itself out soon! This made me think though, if it is anything to do with fungi or worms, are they itchy or sore? My boy is not bothered by it at all
As for puppy fighting, he didn't have the problem with his littermates and the tail was fine until they left

Hiya, I often treat any skin. scar problems with Suducrem which is actually for nappy rash on babies. It is an  antiseptic so carnt hurt the dog, Ive used it on my self also.

What breed is your puppy?

Hi,

Possibly ring worm? - I'm surprised your vet didn't want to take a skin scrape to send off, you could ask him about that.  Hibi scrub is a good thing to try and is safe, it's anti-bacterial.  I would be careful about trying too many different things until you know what it is though as you could end up just irritating it.

He is a Dalmatian.  I tried to speak with my vet eralier but he's already left for tonight but I will call him tomorrow and see if he recommends to take a sample.  He really was not concerned at all when we saw him....  I have seen "ringworms" on horses (not nine!) before and it did not look like what my pup's got..  It has a definate line on the top and somebody run a blade down 3cm - so it look like a up-side-down triangle shape.  It is not completly bald but very thin.

Can I ask where on the tail it is?

My gordon setter had this - called a scent gland?  But now you don't notice it - he's 7 months now. This was about 5 inches from the base of his tail.

Probably completely wrong of course!

Hi! Thank you for the reply : ) It is about 5cm (2inch) from the bace of the tail (at the moment as he's is growing and so is the tail )and originally I was told by my vet it was to do with the hormone (hormone glands) but at the same time he also thought that it was little too early to get it.  After getting some people's concerns (to do with Fungi or Ringworms) I spoke to my vet this morning and he is 100% sure it is nothing to do with those and he beleives that there is no need to do any tests.  He said it was unusual but not that rare either
Thank you so much for your comment and it seems like my boy has it as early as your boy had   I will just have to leave it and pray for it to get better soon.
Kindest regards, Sam

That's ok Sam - glad I was of some help! :)

I meant 5cm too - seemed to notice it more when he got excited as all the hair would stand up and there was the bald patch - being black it really stood out.  As I said now we don't notice it at all so I'm sure with time it will disappear if it is the hormone/scent gland!

Good luck,
