Topic Dog Boards / Health / cystitis in spayed bitches
- By NITRO [gb] Date 08.03.06 17:41 UTC
Hi

Can anyone help, my bitch rottweiler is 11 months old we had her spayed at 5-6mth old, this month she should have had her season but she has suddenly developed cystitis,

I have started with cranberry capsules today for her, and have been advised that the operation may not have been succesful for her to get this infection,

Please can anyone help or advise me incase i need to get her looked at again, possibly sue the vet as it cost me 360.00 for the operation.

Not quite sure I understand what you mean. First off, how would you know when she would have been in season if she was spayed so early on? And what does cystitis have to do with being in season? Cystitis is a bladder/urinary infection, just like in humans -even males can get that. Spayed bitches can however become incontinent, but that's a separate issue. If she has cystitis she ought to be on antibiotics to clear it up -but it won't be the vet's fault.

Her 1st season was due in Sept 05, i was told bitches come into season every 6mths so March 06 should have been the month she was due to come into season.

I had her spayed Sept 05 as i have 2 male rottweilers.

please could you inform me what incontinent means:confused:

She is crouching down to wee but nothing is coming out, she is doing this all the time.  Thanks

Hi Nitro

Oh okay -well seasons can vary greatly as to the timing of them. :) If she is squatting and nothing happens  it does sound like cystitis and she will need antibiotics so you best see the vet.

Incontinent -unable to hold the urine, it is a known side effect of spaying in some bitches.

:cool:Thank you
I will contact the vet straight away.

I was just reading previous messages on the board and people had recommended the cranberry, natural live yoghurt to give dogs.

:confused:Is this not correct

If your bitch can't wee then get her to the vet asap.  Cystitis and spaying are not even linked so it will have nothing to do with the fact your bitch has been spayed or the fact she may or may not be due a season.

Whilst cranberry is good for cystitis in humans, I wouldnt know if its so for dogs but Im sure someone will , if you have an attack you need the doctor. No question, because no amount of gallons of water or berries will help when you have this infection. Well, it helps lol, but you need antibiotics to clear the infection. So, I would think the same for a dog. What worries me is that she needs it to be confirmed that it is cystitis, in case its not, and also in any case she needs treatment from the vet for it asap. Its painful to say the least, and can rise up to the kidneys and cause all sorts of probs.

Let us know how she is, and best of luck

Cystitis is a symptom really rather than strictly an infection in fact it can indicate an entire range of infections or simple irritations, perhaps due to concentrated urine because of dehydration, so yes, you should always see the vet, taking with you a specimen of the urine.

soz gotta be quick - my bitch showed same sympoms ie squatting & I felt for her soo much - took wee sample to vets - negative. turns out it was scar tissue from a previous c-section irritating her bladder

Sure this is what it couls be.
Give her big kisses for me the poor love - should clear up soon.
