Hi can anybody help me I have got an adorable 15 week old yellow Labrador who is scared to go out on the lead he just sits down and shakes and refuses to budge. When we come back into the house he just runs and hides under the table it takes ages to get him out, no amount of treats will entice him. He walks ok in the house on the lead and sometimes round the garden with encouragement but I can't get him any further than the front door.
Please if anyone has got any ideas I would love to try them. I don't want to rush him but I feel he is missing so much he must be fed up of the garden and house.
Hi - You really do need to get him out and experiencing things soon because at 15 wks he is getting dangerously close to the approximate age at which the socialisation window closes, which is from 16-18 wks. From that time onwards anything he hasn't been exposed to, he will be highly likely to be either afraid of or possibly aggressive towards (because afraid of). It will be a lot harder to socialise him after that. You can already see how hard it is to socialise a 15 wk old puppy, compared to a 7 wk old one so imagine what it would be like if he was 5 months. You should realise that you are critically, critically behind on his socialisation at the moment and you really need to put A LOT of time in now to making up what you have lost.
Is it the lead which he doesn't like, or being out of the house? Is he ok being led around the garden on a lead?
Have you enrolled him in a puppy class? This will be a big socialisation experience and hopefully positive, with the combination of other puppies to play with and treats....
