Topic Other Boards / Foo / External DVD writer.....any advice ?
- By cathh5 [gb] Date 04.03.06 15:55 UTC Edited 04.03.06 16:01 UTC
I am wanting to buy an external DVD writer to use with my laptop. It will be used to copy camcorder DVDs only (no films as not into copys of films or music). Any advice on what to buy ? I want to be able to copy the DVD disks from my DVD camcorder for family and friends with ease and some speed and via USB. £100 MAX

Thank you :-)

I can't remember which way round it is but anyone at PC World should know for sure, but you have to be careful of whether the writer records in a plus or minus way, I *think* it is the plus ones that are better especially if you are passing them round to family and friends who may have the cheaper DVD players, because the plus ones can be played on any type of player, whereas some the minus ones will only work on the more expensive DVD players if that makes sence?!!! Other than that I think it is pretty much straight forward.

Good luck :)

i'd love to be of more help cathh5, but i'm useless when it comes to stuff like this! We get a lot of our hardware from either dabs or scan. Their service and prices are good-cheaper than the high street most of the time.

i normally find the product code of the one i like (normally the prettiest!), and google it to find reviews.

good luck in your search!

natalies right about the dvd thingy-plus and minus, although i thought that a lot of the new dvd players'll both-so long as the DVD is finalised properly, otherise it just won't play. Like nat(alie) said though, check the type of media (+ or -) the DVD player will accept. DVD writers themselves tend to accept both + and -, and will write to both.

i wouldn't go to PC World if you paid me-i'd probably come out with a turd on a string! Thats just my opinion though (there was a post a while back about PC World, and it got slated). I live with a know-it-all-nerd, so i don't have a need to go there-unless he goes for a game / book, and as soon as i go through the doors, i feel me losing the will to live.....
