Don't panic!!  Your Vet is frightening you.
Shelties, like Rough Collies can be slow maturing.  Talk to your breeder - always the first thing to do - and I'm sure that they'll tell you not to even consider castrating until over a year old.  It's not always possible to feel testicles at 8 weeks before pups go to their new homes.  Often, the ones that aren't obvious, have 2 to be proud of at 10 months old!! :)

Hi Deborah,

For a vet to say that if it's not descended in 3 weeks it will need removed is, IMO, totally unethical

First thing you should be doing is contacting your breeder and asking if she has other pups in the litter who have as yet not descended both testes.  She will also want to know about your little guy as it may - if it proves to be a permanent situation - affect her future breeding plans.

Pups can retain one or more testes for quite some time and still go on to develop normally.  I've personally known of a dog where the second testes dropped at 10 months (no sign of it existing before that ;) ) and have heard of others as late as 15 months.

If you did not buy your puppy as a show prospect, the absence of one testes means that yes, while at a much later date he would have to have the retained one removed, he will still meet all the criteria of your expectations for a much loved family pet :)   If he were to need an operation in the future, I would recommend that you wat until he is at least 2 years old and have only the retained testicle removed at that time - allowing him to keep the descended one means that he will not lose any of the male hormones which will keep his character and physical appearance distinctly masculine as well as ensuring his coat remains manageable.

regards, Teri

Hi
thanks for your replys they have settled me down a little im sorry if i sounded very unclear the vet said we would have think about getting it removed in time as it can turn cancerous but she said she would check again iin three weeks i think i just got a shock thinking my little babe would need an op  once  again thanks

Your vet should also be able to feel the undescended testicle if it's in the proper spot...sometimes being able to bring it manually into place.  The true danger comes when the testicle is in the abdomen...if your vet can feel it above the scrotal sac, there's nothing wrong in waiting a bit to see if it drops.

One word  of caution don't keep checking I never bother until the puppy has finished teething by which time you should be able to see them let alone feel them. If a puppy is constantly being checked it can cause stress which can lead to the b*lls being drawn up

Total Rubbish.
My boy's second one came down a six months and in some dogs it has been known to be a year.
Some vets just seem to frighten you. They're gagging to get their hands on our dogs bits.
Mine gave me a right mouthful as I didn't get spayed til she was three as I let her have some seasons.

:rolleyes:OMG in that case I should have had my BC puppy done as his b*lls were up & down like  yoyos until he had lost all his baby teeth. He is now entire

3 weeks time :eek:If he's not entire by the time he's 12 months is more like it ! Small dogs b*lls are like peas when they are little & can be drawn up & down when stressed

I remember my mum telling me that years ago she took her Ch basenji to crufts in the days when they were vet checked and was told he only had 1, it was cold outside!!
My youngster didn't drop both of his until 12 weeks.

Hi deborah, one of my boys didnt drop till he was 10mths old, another was 6 mths and then it kept going back up and  tony was just 3 mths old when his dropped.Like they say every one is different but at his age i wouldnt worry at all .
- By hopevalley [gb] Date 15.03.06 19:05 UTC
I know a FC who didn't drop until he was 16mths old.
I really wouldn't worry at this age and would echo what the others have said.  The more you fiddle, checking if they've arrived, the more likely he is to tuck them back up if he sees you coming to check!! :)

I judged a match last night and at least half of the boys in the puppy walk only had one or one and a little bit available for inspection!!

I know it's hard, but try and forget about it for a while, and you may be suprised to find that they drop when you least expect it!

Best of luck with him.

The stud i used for my girls litter hes didnt drop until he was 2 and my girl whelp 9 healthy pups. You just have to give the guys some time some drop really early and some can stay up until around 2. I suggest getting a new vet
