Hi everyone

Just interested to know, what is the earliest that your pup's have opened their eyes.

One of Carina's pups opened hers at 7 days, 2 others at 8 days and the last 1 at 9 day!! Seemed quite early to me.

hi
most of mine open their eyes after they are 10 days old, i think the earliest was 11 days and the lattest was 14 days

My pups eyes dont usually open til about 12 days or even at late as 14. I had one once that opened one eye at 7 days and the other stayed firmly shut for several more days. She looked really strange, quite comical, but when eye tested at 7 weeks was fine. My lab's pups used to have their eyes open at 8/9 days. Do others find that the larger breeds open their eyes earlier than smaller breeds as a rule?

WL, I was thinking the same question about smaller vs larger breeds. It would make sense that smaller breeds would open their eyes faster since they develop & mature faster in proportion to their size. But since I"m not a breeder, I have no clue if the logic is logical :D :D

I agree with WL that smaller dogs tend to be later at opening their eyes although it might appear logical that they would be earlier. From talking to others both in my own breed and in other breeds, and reading 'The Book of The Bitch' I can reckon on my puppies doing things a few days after the book suggests they should. They certainly don't double their birth weight anywhere near as fast as the book says they should.

I think in general small dogs are slower in the first few weeks in life, but then accelerate and overtake the bigger dogs to reach maturity. It has always been accepted practice that big dogs are ready to leave home much earlier than toy dogs.

There has been a "thread" on this in Dog World recently - and it mentioned some pups had eyes that opened soon after they were born and were fine. Must be strange to see a really tiny pup with an open eye. Mine normally start to open around 9 days and are fully open by 12 ish days

They're a medium breed, it's my Spanish Water Dogs and of course they were born a few days early too!! Usually they start at 9 days, but I've never had them open them before that before.
