Hi

My bitch had 3 pups yesterday. All well and feeding.

My only concern is mum wont touch water. She is happy to drink Lactol and has had quite a bit but no plain water.

Is this ok or does she need the water to. I am working on the theory that some fluid is better than none.

I am making it up as directed on the tin. 3.5 scoops per pint, if she is having it all the time should i make it a bit weaker?

Hi Wendy, I use 3 scoops per pint....but my girls also enjoy warm very very weak tea with a little of the lactol mix in just to colour it :)   It may take acouple of days for her to go back to drinking water again....

I know when I feel a bit lousy or am in recovery, I prefer something a little more tasty that plain water....I am sure the girls feel the same....just make sure she has plenty of liquids, even if you have to scoop it up into you hand for her to drink...little and often is better than huge amounts in one go. Although I did find than putting lukewarm liquid down for them was more enticing :)

Ditto what Kay said. 3 scoops and warm water. Mine won't touch cold anything for a while.  I sit at the box and let her drink out the bowl I am holding.

Hi

Thanks

So she is ok not having any water as long as she is taking the Lactol. She is drinking a lot of it. Naturally I have to sit and hold it for her in her box :o))

Are you taking her out every few hours to wee and/or poo?

I always add milk and maybe a little honey to the water to make it more tempting, and also boil up a chicken carcass in lots of water and give her the stock to drink. Fluid intake's vital; more important than food for the first 24 hours. After that I give a little easily-digested food for a couple of days; rice, chicken, scambled egg etc. Her insides have taken a battering and need gentle treatment to get back into position. :)

It may help to actually warm the water up slightly as the coldness of the water might put her off from drinking it after all that's gone in her stomach over the last 9 weeks :d

Hi

Yes she is being carried out to the garden for the toilet. She has actually got up a couple of times to go herself to.

Have tried warm water but not interested.

Mines love the Lactol or Whelpi.  Never seem really be bothered with the water either. You can always reduce the volume of powered you put in at every other bowl mix.
