Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Nibbling Dobes

This is going to sound like a strange question, but here goes.

When my two Dobes (mother and daughter) are excited and feeling playful they nibble at Hamish's (Goldie) neck and ears etc. He, being the kindest dog you could meet, just lets them get on with it. Why do they do it? None of my other dogs (Goldies and Spaniels) do this. They also do it to each other.

My mum and dad's two Spanish do this to each other.  It looks like they are knibbling a corn on the cob, they drive me mad with it!

my dobe does this too, but as we have no other dog (yet :-D ) he does it to us   I don't mind too much and nor does my 3 year old but my daughter 8 1/2  and OH go mad, they hate it!! He also tries to groom us (like when they clean using front teeth only!) especially if I have been out working and been near to other dogs  maybe he is trying to rid me of their smell

My dobe does this - half the time he's showing affection to my other dog, and he's got a thing about licking her ears - the poor girl often walks around with both ears inside out!!  The other half of the time it's play; he cleans her neck very violently, really pushing with his front teeth, until she gives in and has a go - the next thing you know they're off playing.  Doesn't take much to get the other one up and playing, mind you - she's got a lot of energy to burn!

My dobe does this too- he will nibble really hard on my rotties neck, until the rottie has had enough and then the play starts!!!!

I know the feeling Nikita. Lottie (Mum) has permanently got wet ears with Hattie's constant licking and chewing. I think it is like a sort of comfort thing, she just sits for ages chewing her Mum's ears - quite sweet really (apart from the state of Lottie's ears!).

lol!  I used to think Opi didn't like it, she gets that long-suffering look on her face when Rem starts - but yesterday I noticed she'd walked over to where he was dozing on an armchair to get him to start.  Every time I think I understand her...
