No it's not easy to use clippers without training.  It's very easy to cut the dog, but I assume that's not what you really want to do?
Why not use a brush and a comb and then just take the length off the bottom with scissors so that the coat doesn't touch the floor?

I agree with Val.  What attracted you firstly to the Yorkie?  Was it the way that they looked?  In my eyes the clipped pet Yorkie looks absolutely nothing like the breed so I do wonder why people then purchase one to make it look like something else.

Not getting at you honest.  But if your breeder or someone could show you how to scissor and comb/brush them in a way that you'd find it easier to keep the coat in good condition, surely would be better?

I can live with the idea of medium haired Yorkies, though I agree they're nothing like as beautiful as the full show coated ones, but I can't stand the ones whose coats get clipped completely off - and then the owners put woolly jumpers on them!!!

I totally agree with  val many times, i've thought i could clip my Westies like the groomers and i've been soooooo wrong.  They look like the sheep shearer has been out:eek:

its around the eyes that really need doing at the moment

Well you don't need clippers for that!!!
Hold your dog's beard firmly with your left hand.  Comb the fringe forward and down over the eyes.  Starting with your scissors on the cheek on the right side (I'm assuming that you're right handed) keep the scissors pointing AWAY from the eyes and cut an arch, up and over the eyes and down the other side.  Please don't cut your dog like the title of your post.
Don't cut a straight line or your dog will look like my daughter when I used send her to school with her fringe crooked!!!!!!!
