Hi, I am probably going to show my ignorance now!!! But on Monday night at Ringcraft, we had a couple turn up with a Dachshund, long haired and another one, that to my mind looked like a blue Merle!!! They said it was a Silver Dapple...well, I've never seen one of these before and I must admit he was quite attractive! But I wondered if anyone else had seen one before?(I bet you've seen loads and I'm just ignorant huh???LOL) Thanks in advance, Dawn X

I sometimes meet a lady onwalks with a dacs that fits that description so I guess it's probably a silver dapple although I've never asked for the precise description :D I shall certainly ask her when I see her next. She is a beautiful dog with a fab temperament :)

Seen loads, they are my favourite colour. They are gorgeous.

This dog WAS lovely, and such a lovely temprament...unfortunatley the long haired one was a bit snappy!
I have a mini long Chocolate Dapple. I wanted a silver dapple but went along to see Percy anyway and came back with him!

I think silver dapple is just blue merle with a different name :D I haven't seen many, just one or two, but I agree that they're very attractive!
What are red merle Dachshunds called? Red dapple? I've not seen any, but I've seen photos.

The father-in-law of one my work collegues owns a silver dapple mini longhair dach. She has a wonderful temperament. There was a scary moment last year when one of their other dogs (a griffon) got with her. Luckily nothing came of it and she has been speyed now....the pups would have interesting though.

ive seen silver dapple dachshunds , coz ive got 2 !! :) you are right about red dapple , ive got one of them also ! mine are mini smooth haired !:)

Are they registered as Red dapple or chocolate dapple? Just wondered if I was misinformed? I suppose I really ought to look it up in the standard

In the standard the colours are "All colours allowed but (except in dapples which should be evenly marked all over) no white permissible, save for a small patch on chest which is permitted but not desirable. Nose and nails black in all colours except chocolate/tan and chocolate/dapple, where brown permitted.
How would one describe the colour of the one in the picture
here?

JG, the one at ringcaft is MUCH prettier than that one!!! JUST MY OPINION of course(especially if you own one like the one pictured!!LOL) It's more even in it's markings, and is reallya very pretty little bitch! Though it does have a few bits of white!! LOL :D :D :D

What I know about dachshunds would get lost written on a postage stamp, but what puzzled me with that picture is that it looks like a tricolour, and I'd have thought 'silver dapple' was a particular way of saying 'blue roan', (with 'chocolate dapple' being 'liver roan' and 'red dapple' being 'red roan') but I didn't think blue roans had tan ... I'm very muddled ... :o

I could be confusing you even more now :) and may have nothing to do with Dachshunds which I also know nothing about :p but in Cockers you have a blue roan and tan sometimes erroneously called a tricolour which of course is a black, white and tan.

HA HA HA Me too...that one in the picture doesn't really look anything like the bitch I saw...she looked like what I would have called a Blue Merle...veryy pretty...to be honest I don't like that one in the picture very much!!! There I've said it!!! LOL :D :D :D

Well it is basically a Tri merle, but I don't think they distinguish.
A freind of mine has a Choc tri Border collie, and when mated to a blue merle she prodcued Tri merles in standard and chocolate variants (a lot of people call the chocs/Livrs in BC's reds, but genetically they are not Red).

Yep they are merles but in Dachs the colour is called Silver Dapple and I ahve seen a fair few at shows. Can be very prety like merles n other breeds, depending on how the colour is distributed.
You can also get chocolate Dapple.
yes, silver dapple, red dapple, chocolate dapple ..... but in America they have even more colours, double dapple & piebald :)

The one in the link about just looks pretty much the same as the piebald one - red and white...although I suppose it looks like it might possibly be red sable? Very interesting isn't it.
im looking at triple dapple !! 2 silver & 1 red drooling over my pizza !!! lol :)
The Silver Dapple is also known as Black and Tan Dapple.
I would guess that the dog in the first picture link posted is actually a Double Dapple, because of the considerable amount of white. I am by no means an expert, just a lover of the breed, and I have read wuite a bit about colour genetics in dachshunds. (Double Dapple should not be bread for by ethical breeders because there is a high risk of deafness/blindness, I believe our Kennel Club here in Australia will not allow them to be registered)
Pauline
yes thats the same as british KC , double dapple ae not registered. all my books on breeding say
never to breed dapple with dapple as this causes deafness/blindess & poss deformities . i recently had lady ask to use my silver dapple boy to stud with her bitch. she said over the phone her girl was black & tan, when she brought the bitch round for me to meet , check out pedigree ,etc, i noticed a few tiny bits of faded grey on her head , " oh shes registered silver dapple but its faded over the last 4 years " ( which it can ) DOH !!! boy did i have a hard time explaining its the genes that matter

Do you know, I've learnt more on this thread than I can imagine!! Thanks for your input folks, much appreciated! Love Dawn X :D
I saw a mini long double dapple not too long ago and he had deformed eyes because of it poor thing. The people who owned him didn't have a clue as to what he was.
