Topic Dog Boards / General / Insuring a bitch if you have more than 2 litters
- By crosby [gb] Date 22.02.06 12:50 UTC
I know there have been several post about insurance but I'm after some advice re companies that cover you if you breed. My dogs have always been insured with M&S but they will only continue to insure your bitch if you have no more than 2 litters from her. I'm not looking for insurance for breeding costs but general cover. I'm only having the 2nd litter from my bitch so am still OK for cover but have not ruled out having a 3rd liiter and after ringing them yesterday to check found out that I would not be covered if I do so. I'm going to ring round some friends tonight who have been breeding for longer than me and find out who they use but just wondered if anyone had any advice.
Thanks

They insure the bitch for everyday usual stuff covered by the policy like the do for male or female dog but not whelping related treatment.

I'm not sure I read this correctly, but is the poster inferring there is a problem with general insurance, if the bitch has had more than 2 litters :confused:

That's how I'm reading it too!!

That is exactly how I interpret what they are saying. However it doesn't say anything on the policy in the exclusions. I am with them to. It all seems fine to me.

To clarify, I thought they were covered for general problems with M & S. I've never had insurance for whelping costs and understand this is impossible to get or very expensive. The problem was that I was renewing my cover with M & S when the person I was talking to asked me if my girl had ever had a litter. I said that yes she had a litter 2 years ago and was expecting her second. This was when he told me that their insurance only covers bitches who have up to 2 litters for general cover and that if you have a third you invalidate their policy. I asked to speak to the supervisor who confirmed the same saying that my girl would not be covered after a third and I would have to find another insurer. I had never heard this before and can't find my policy to check the terms and conditions. I will contact them again tomorrow to discuss but was wondering who other people used in this position.

Interesting point - I brought this up a little while ago and on readin my 'smallprint' it says that dogs will not be covered if used for breeding purposes (direct line). Inferring they will not be covered for anything if used to breed from?

I think the terms and conditions are on the net are they not.

The terms and conditions are on the net but there's nothing stated re number of litters just that your pet is excluded if used for breeding purposes and for any direct or indirect costs associated with whelping. According to the advisor the underwriters interpretation of a pet used for breeding purposes is a dog that has more than 2 litters which might be a problem for me as I have not ruled out a third. I'm going to move to another insurer now just to make sure.
