Topic Dog Boards / General / Shar Pei Insurance question?
- By nic29 [gb] Date 15.02.06 11:33 UTC
Hi all

A rather boring question I'm afraid.  I am looking to change my Shar Pei Dutch's insurance.  He is with the Kennel Club (all of my Shar Pei have been) and they have just sent me a renewal quote for him - he's a year old without one claim and they have increased his insurance from £19.95 per month to £38.99!!!!  I am appalled and obvouisly want to look at an alternative.

Now I have just looked at Marks and Spencer and Sainsbury's and both have declined to insure a Shar Pei.  M&S saying no to Shar Pei, Pit Bulls and Wolf Hybrids.  So I wondered where everyone with Shar Pei insurance their dogs?

Thanks and hope you can help.

Nicky

This confirms my suspicions about KC insurance. I had the 6 weeks free insurance and was then offered the standard rate of £22.95 per month for the first year. I believe that is the standard premium for the first year irrespective of the dog being insured.
However when I asked what happened to the premium in the second year, they were unable to give me a straight answer. All I was told was "it probably won't change very much". I asked them for an example of insurance for a 2 year dog of my breed and was told that the system wouldn't allow them to quote.

I tried on 3 separate calls to get an indication of second year insurance and each time was rebuffed. As most of us know, changing insurer can be difficult once it is ongoing because of exemptions etc. I suspect that kennel club pull you in on a flat rate premium for year 1 and then there is a horrible shock on renewal !!

I used to have two shar-pei and the insurance quotes were RIDICULOUS. I ended up just putting the money in a savings account for them every month. Like I've said here several times before, I ended up well in front (probably by about £3000 minimum) over their lifetimes than if I'd insured them. The only things they ever went to the vet's for was stuff that they wouldn't have covered anyway like dental work and spaying.

I have my TM insured but only because it's about £9 a month with Sainsburys, so it seems a good gamble. That's the thing about insurance - the companies don't do it out of the goodness of their hearts - they make money hand over fist. In the end it's a gamble for both parties - they hope you'll never claim and you hope that if you have to and it costs thousands, you'll be covered becasue you've paid money in.

i've just checked more than, nicky, and they'll insure a one yer old male shar pei for just over £16 a month. I didn't look at the excess or policy itself though, but at least theres a company who'll insure him!
