Morning all,
I'm trying to think of inventive ways to keep my puppys' Kong as exciting as possible so just wanted know what everyone on here does.
She's on JWB puppy performance, but want to put really really good stuff in there. Apart from peanut butter, what else can I give a puppy that won't make her pile on the pounds, upset her tum and what should I do with regards her normal meals. I don't intend to give her many Kongs a day, just while I'm trying to alay her anxiety fears when I leave the room/house and continue to make the crate the best place in the whole world!!
Many thanks!
Karen

Morning to you.
Well, my dog adores the layer system, first pop some normal food in,only a bit, then layer with either banana and liver treats, she likes chopped bits of chicken as one layer,a bit of garlic sausage, small bone biscuits cheese spread etc, I cannot recall all the favourites but as you can see the kongs your oyster. Oviously chocolate is a no no,as is i belive onions, someone else told me sweetcorn wasnt a good idea either, wander if anyone else has heard that one.
When filling make sure the ends have something a bit mushy to hold it all in place. ie banana. We have been know to freeze ours aswell so it takes her longer to finish. She loves hers and we are experimenting all the time with ingredients. First checking to make sure nothing we are adding will be toxic.
Hope this helps. I reckon others will be able to add their favourite fillings to this post.
Oh and one more thing. My doggie started refusing one of her meals, usually the late afternoon one, so i guess she sort of self regulated her intake, although this was one of my concerns also so i naturally gave her a little less at meal times if she had had a kong that day, we dont use them all the time, usually if the weather is disgusting and we have done her training for the day she likes to settle down with one in an afternoon.
Bye
julie
Favouites at the minute are:-
Frozen raw mince
Natural yogurt with pieces of liver mixed in, again frozen.
As the previous poster says the world is your oyster, if it's ok for the dog to eat and you can fit it in the kong - give it a go. :-)
Even frozen they only last my girl about 15 mins now though - she become expert at how to get goodies out quickly :-)
Bits of carrot are good, especially if they are just small enough to fit in. Cheese, left over veg and meat, sometimes mashed up with a little gravy, liver pate, oats cooked in stock.... the list goes on and on!

I discovered my dog's favorite stuffing by mistake. I was distracted while making liver cake and forgot the flour. It ended up like pate. I stored it in the freeze and layer it with my puppy's regular food and a wedged gravy bone to make him work for it. He loves it! nice and smelly. PM me if you don't have a recipe.

Liver Cake Recipe...
This recipe makes a large quantity, which can be frozen (as long as your dog does not eat it all first!).
Ingredients
· 1lb Liver (ox or lamb)
· 1lb Plain Flour (or wholemeal)
· 2 eggs
· garlic paste
· water
Method
· Place liver, egg and garlic paste into a food mixer
· Mix until blended
· Add flour and a bit of water to achieve the right consistency (gooey)
· Mix well
· Put into a lightly greased baking tray
· Place in a pre-heated oven, gas mark 4, 180°C for approximately 20 minutes
· When cooked cut into small pea-sized pieces.
· Keep refrigerated (for up to 7 days) or freeze.
This can also be made in a Kong.
· Pour mixture into a Kong so that the bottom third is covered.
· Stand the Kong unto its end in the microwave (you may need to prop it up).
· Cook until the mixture bounces back when touched.
· Leave to cool before giving it to your salivating hound!

KONG RECIPES
ICED KONGPlug the end of the Kong with a treat. Turn it upside down in a cup. Fill it full of chicken gravy and freeze. Try Cat food as well.WARNING - Frozen kong can get messy and are recommended for outdoor use only.
SPANISH KONG1 egg, grated cheese and any vegetables your dog likes.Scramble the egg and fold in the vegetables. Squash into the Kong. Sprinkle some cheese over the top and microwave for about 20 seconds to seal the ingredients. Cool thoroughly.WARNING - Cheese becomes very hot in the microwave.
KONG AU GRATINMix cheese pieces or cheese spread with your dogs usual dried dog food and press into the Kong. Microwave until the cheese starts to melt and bind the food together. Let it cool to a safe temperature. Use a cup to contain the Kong when in the microwave.
NOUVELLE KONGSSmear peanut butter or Marmite inside the cavity of the Kong for a quick and minimalist alternative.
TANTALISERSCheese, Chicken skin, Bacon, Pate, Cooked lamb's liver, meaty canned cat food. - Use very sparingly and make sure this treat blocks the top hole so that none of your other ingredients fall out.
MAIN COURSESSmall dog biscuits, bread sticks, garlic bread, pizza crusts, carrot batons - These treats should be wedged into place. Experiment with different brands of dog biscuits and look at small dog sizes which are very versatile. You want to leave lots of interesting gaps. some biscuits should be harder to get out than others.
INSTANT REWARDSFreeze-dried liver, cat treats, Chopped sausage, grated cheese. - These need to be small, flavoursome goodies. the second your dog nudges the Kong, some of these should fall out to get him hooked. If they are all dispersed immediately, its going to be a bit dull for your dog - so make sure you shake the Kong as you're filling it so some bits end up working their way into all the crevices created by the wedged biscuits.
BANANA-RAMA1 fresh banana · 2 tbs wheat germ · 1 tbs plain yoghurt (can use your pet's favorite flavor as well) - Mash up the banana, add wheat germ and yogurt. Mash all ingredients together and use spoon to add to Kong. Freeze for 4 hours.
CHEESY DENTAL KONG DELIGHT3 slices of your pet's favorite cheese - Just place the 3 slices of cheese directly onto the grooves of your pet's Dental Kong (if model has rope - make sure cheese does not get onto it). Melt in microwave for 20 to 30 seconds. Give to pet after it cools.
PHILLY STEAKSteak scraps · 1 ounce cream cheese - Place small scraps of the steak inside Kong toy. Spread cream cheese in the large hole to hold scraps.
I've plenty more if you want them...

Fabulous new Kong recipes...I'm a bit boring with mine and usually just melt beef dripping or use peanut butter or cream cheese - my dogs are going to have the Spanish Kong tonight though :D
Gemma, loved your ideas, please keep them coming!

They love it.
