Topic Dog Boards / General / Bloody discharge - heat?

My 5 month old Doberman bitch has been having very slight bloody discharge from her vagina for the last couple of days. It's just a few drops here and there. Could she be going into heat already?

Yes! Is her vulva swollen?

O my goodness! My first heat, um I mean her first heat, hee hee ;)

She's now out for a walk with my husband, when they get back, I will check to see if it's swollen. Any other signs I should look for?

Hi,

That is very early for a dobe but it is perfectly possible. As well as the swelling, which is usually very obvious, and discharge she may seem a bit sad or more clingy than usual or a bit grumpy - my girl went between sad, clingy and grumpy :-) such fun, bless her!  She'll probably be licking quite a bit to keep herself clean aswell.  Make sure you keep her on lead all the time when you have her out for walks through this time and don't let her in the garden unattended, as she may find a boyfriend somehow, or they may find her.  Mind you Ciara wouldn't let anyone near her back end the whole way through her season - they're not usually like that though, normally become right little strumpets in the later part of the season. :-)

could be about to blow up! we usually have brown/red discharge showing up on a tissue for a day before the thing swells up and that takes a couple of days
