Topic Dog Boards / General / Cav pup - Hairy man bits
- By luvhandles Date 11.02.06 22:23 UTC
Hi,

I feel a bit silly posting this but my Cav pup Harvey has a huge lock of hair at the end of his tinkle - about 2" long. Just wondered if this is normal? When he has been out to wee, it obviously gets wet and then he comes in and lays on the rug.....not very hygienic. I have thought about trimming it but my husband won't let me as he says that it's probably there for a reason - to keep out infection or something. Any thoughts??

Flynn was the same.  I have trimmed his a little and things are a lot better now LOL

The vet I worked for always used to say don't trim it, certainly not all of it, because it is there for a reason. She said to look at a bull and you'll see THEIR huge tuft. :) It's to stop dirt etc from getting in.

Hmmm, think I'll leave it alone then! At least I know he's normal lol!

Hardly the same thing a bull & a domestic dog & the amount some cavaliers have would mean a bull with two feet of tuft ! not something I've ever seen

I trim my dogs puppy "tufts" & then keep it farly short

LOLOL Having visions of Bulls with the same ratio of coat as a male cavalier Hmmm would make an Aberdeen Angus look bald especially if it the coat nearly touched the floor like my Lou's :D

You think that's good - I have visions of a farmer running round a field brandishing a pair of scissors, trying to trim a bull's willy hair. :D

My Flynn, almost being the size of an Aberdeen Angus, goes au naturel as his 'tuft' is quite a way off the floor, so there's plenty of breeze underneath to dry him off.

Hummmm - more likely to hang on to that 'nice manly' smell and make them more 'attractive' to the opposite sex - was the vet a man by any chance?  If it was there to stop dirt getting in - surely females should have something similar?  If you look at the pattern of hair on a girls 'bits' it's more likely to funnel liquid away......

Mine is a different breed, but we trim the boys "tassles" - very unhygenic not to, I would say

Not at all, this was a female vet and we OFTEN saw male dogs with foreskin infections, and each and every one had had all the tuft trimmed away by the groomer.

Edited to say: bitches don't get as close to all sorts of stuff like dogs do. :)

I trimmed my boys' tufts quite short, but not completely off. At grooming college we are told to clip along their willies as well, is this not a good thing then? If not someone should tell the City & Guild people! :-)

We dont take it all off - I would hate to think how long it would get on a 12 year old dog without trimming! My 8 week old pups have a good half inch already!!!

I just gave Flynn a little trim because his tuft was so long and he dribbled everywhere (UGH)

I trim all my boys, even the pups have theirs trimmed before they go to their new homes!!

my flynny dosent even have a tufft!!!!!(just had a look) he has a really hairy willy but it stops where....er ...it should do!!!!

(that tufty bit must be awfully tickily!!!!!!-cut it off!)

My grooming college warned me to be careful when cutting the tuft off though - in case the willy suddenly poked out and got cut instead - aargh!

I was taught to hold the skin with one hand and cut against my own fingers (not the dog) around all edges - undercarriage, ears, tails etc.
- By Fillis Date 12.02.06 18:55 UTC
Ditto, Val - hold the "tuft" and cut to your finger/thumb, then nothing can "pop out"

I found that the 'tuft' on my boy caused wee to run to the floor well away from his front leg hair :D  Nothing worse than wee'd on leg hair eew!  - discovered the difference after cutting the 'tuft' short  it took ages to grow back ;)

I trim my boys too, but I would never clip it,  I still leave quite some length on, as I always thought for hygiene reason it was better to have some there :d   What a subject
