could anyone tell me at what stage of pregnancy does a bitch produce her milk ie;how many weeks gone thankyou
- By Isabel Date 08.02.06 14:18 UTC
It would appear from other threads on the subject that it is very variable although it seemed to me that the majority said it did not appear until delivery, or shortly after anyway, certainly that was the case with my bitch.

Most of our bitches don't produce milk until the pups arrive. I have heard of bitches having milk about a week before they whelp so it varies between bitches really.

Same here. I've seen milk a few days before whelping but in most cases it did not appear until the pups were born.

My dog is due to have pups in about a week. Just noticed they are filling with milk but not leaking milk.

my bitch had milk 3 weeks into pregnancy but I think that's the exception not the rule.

It is more usual to be after birth, but I have noticed that a bitch who has had a previous litter the teats may fill up before birth.

If it is her first time, it will most likely be after.

Two of my bitches had the same scenario after their first litter, one of them her teats all but touched the floor they were so heavy a week  before whelping (I remember it well as she looked more like a cow than a dog! :-D) they too did not leak, the whelping and feeding afterwards all went very well, so it is nothing to worry about at all.

ive had all different times with different girls one didnt produce no milk until the first pup appeared she had no problems. The second girl produced alot of milk at the start of labour and milk was pouring everywhere with every contraction she had no probs either. The girl i have now produced milk three weeks before whelp and was completely full of milk and leaking everywhere the last week of pregnancy and she ended up with eclampsia that may have nuthing to do with it but she was the first girl i had who had milk so early on and the only one with troubles really

It is really variable.  I had a bitch that literally dripped milk in the last week of her pregnancy, but her milk supply was really poor for the pups and I had to top them all up.  Her mother never produced milk until the last puppy was born, so the first pups were crying and restless for hours, yet when her milk came in it was brilliant and the pups were big and fat.
