A weimy friend's dog caught a mixie rabbit about 10 days ago and then went to have a drink from a puddle. The puddle turned out to have nitrates in it from when they had been spraying the fields. The dog was very sick thoughout the night and was taken to the vets the following day, he gave steroids and said see how she goes. She seemed to be pulling thru but then after about 4-5 days stopped drinking and eating again, my friend tried to syringe some fluids into her and her gums were yellow when she opened her mouth. 24 hours later she was dead. The nitrates had poisioned her liver, there was nothing the vets could do!
Remeber this and dont let your dogs drink from puddles, especially nr fields!!!

Oh my god :( That's Holly's favourite pastime on a walk. She wees in the puddles and then drink the water (disgusting I know, but it keeps her amused :D)
Your poor friend, what a terrible thing to happen.

That's absolutely horrible & sad Lynn. I feel for the woman. I have the same worries over here too. But the girls seem to never get into the mindset of drinking from puddles or streams.....thankfully. I still watch them like a hawk though.
There was an acquaintance who took her 3 year old St. Bernard out behind her apt. building like she always did -- a couple of months ago. Evie was off leash, went around the corner for a moment, came back immediately when called. A while later, she started convulsing & even with immediate vet treatment, she died the next day. Her liver or kidneys had shut down. She suspected poison. I think it was anti freeze. Only takes a spoonful to kill a small dog... not much more for a larger animal.
Just everyone please watch out if you can... Lynn, my condolences on your friend's weim. :(

Silly question I know but what are Weimys used for I have never seen any thing on the back ground such handsome dogs'[must have based that film on them the handsome stranger] LOL
Pat
Weimaraners (pronounced Vime a raners also known as Weimars because that's where they originate - Weimar in Germany) are gundogs, they also come under the HPR category and do exactly that Hunt, Point and Retrieve. They are also very good at agility, obedience, working trials and field trials, they can be long or short coated, the short coated being more popular. If you want to know more about them look at the
Weimaraner breed guide written by a top breeder (mine actually ;-) )

Thanks a bunch hope you don't mind have printed that off ,I found the last paragraph so interesting about sit and door manners so easy.I really do like this breed but I had to get a breed that will not moult re grand-Kids and asthma.
Lots of breeds on the board that I really like and I am going to start my own file on them just to learn all about the breed and it's history .
A young lady at college said my breed bouvier in the first world war was dropped from plane's with bombs on them,I am trying to get this verified .Thanks again Patxx

Thats awful, makes you wonder effect all these sprays etc have on our insides if it did that to the poor dog, can't be doing much for the wildlife either. :(

MY GWP caught e coli in exactly the same way. I never let any of mine drink from puddles.

Another thing they can catch from drinking is Lepto... as it is not only dogs that urinate and drink from the same holes in the ground, and I understand the vaccination does not cover all the different variations. If I remember correctly this also causes liver damage, jaundice etc

This is just one of the reasons to teach & reinforce in your dogs any/all of the commands to "leave it" "drop it" or "stop it" from the very start of their lives. We can foresee trouble ... they cannot :(
