I walk a JRT a couple of days a week. When I first took her out a few months ago she was very friendly with other dogs, always ready to play and run about. She came into season over Christmas (when I was on holiday) and now she's terribly nippy with other dogs. When she was coming off her season there were still males that were interested but I kept her on the lead and away from other dogs when I could. How long does a season last? Male dogs still seem to be getting worked up by her and she gets quite nasty (snapping and growling) with other dogs (male and female I think) off lead, but she's fine with other dogs when she's on the lead. I think she's nearly 2 years old now. I'm just not sure what the problem is... I tend to take her out with her ball but when I do that she ignores everything else (other dogs, other people) and gets over excited. Is there anything I can do to get her... well not back to normal, but back to friendlier ways?
Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks!
Seasons can last for approx 4 wks did you mark it down on the calendar. Hormones are a wonderful thing.I give my girls a nice bath after a season to help rid the scent. I had a similar problem with one of my girls over Christmas when she came into season.
It did take a good few weeks for things to go back to normal .
Hi. Thanks for the quick reply. I didn't mark her season on the calendar- she's not my dog, I just take her out at lunchtime two days a week. I don't want to appear rude by asking the owner to bath her and her bedding. I just feel a little bit guilty that she isn't doing her normal doggy things like having a good sniff around the park and so on. There was one dog who seemed rather upset that she wouldn't play or allow sniffing- he got terribly whiny and barky- she gave him a right good telling off, I thought there was going to be a fight.
Thanks for the reassurance. Hopefully she'll be back to normal soon...
it wouldnt be offencive to ask the owners to give her a bath explain why because soon she may nip at the wrong dog and end up seriously injured or dead
