Hi,

I have just had a quote from my Vet for Microchipping at £45.00, that sounds alot to me. I for some reason thought it was £20.00 - £25.00 has the price gone up recently?

Does anybody know of anywhere in Central London that's a more reasoniable price?

That's the problem with the chipping system all the implanters can charge what they like !

I think you'll find it's the vets that charge what they like. Most 'independent' chippers charge between £10 - £15.

There are no fixed prices with chipping & as there are lots of people chipping for all the different companies the non vet chippers have competition. Lots of vets offer cheaper chipping if it is done with another procedure

There is no one company or offical body to who all chippers have to be associated with. Petlog of course is a registry not a chippers organisation

You could always tattoo instead, that costs only £20 for an adult.

I phoned around the vets in my area for my girl and got it done dead cheap during her first puppy checkup and the jabs too, I would of paid a lot lot more if I hadnt. Vets are not like doctors. They do have practices yes thats true, but you could see one vet of the practice one week, then another the following. So why not shop around for spaying, worming tabs and chipping etc? Perhaps if more owners did that, their prices would be more competative. I always tell the vet first if I'm going elsewhere or if I think they are overcharging. Why pay more when very often the price will be reviewed there and then. I will also be getting our girl tested first to see if she really does need boosters. Vets don't always know everything just look at all the unsocialised dogs out there on leads who were not allowed to mix as young puppies "Because the vet said!"

£20 for a tattoo...blimey....and I thought it could cost hundreds....certainly did or me.lol....understand the point you are making tho tattooing and microchipping are, surely. a tiny sum compared to the initial cost of the dog/ bitch...my Sheltie pup £500...wot price for the potentially safe return of a loved family member?!

That is why mine have both, plis wear properly inscribed tags wih my address and phone number on.

It sounds to me as though this price may also include vacinations too, in which case it would be a good deal.  :-)

The price for a health check is usually about £8, so it could not have even been those two together.

If it is in fact just the price for a microchip, forget this practice and go to another that does not rip off it's clients.

Our local dog warden does it for £14.
Not sure if wardens in all area's do chipping, but might be worth ringing your local authority to find out. And they do it in the comfort of your own home!

Where I live it's a law that every puppy has to be chipped the first time he gets his vaccinations (7-8 wekks old). It costs (in your money) around 15GBP. When do you have to micro chip your dogs?

we don't have to but it is advised to.

Ory, in the Uk it is not a legal requirement to have your dogs chipped or tattood.  Some of us would prefer that it NEVER becomes mandatory as there are those of us who prefer to tattoo rather than chip......

I only paid my vet £15 for Callah's but haven't had Tink done yet as Callah's chip  ended up in her left back leg
My vet tried to persuade me to have Tinks done with her vaccs but I wouldn't.
I am going to wait until she's older,so there is less chance of it going 'walkabout' :)

Oh I see.... we have to have them chipped not only because of stolen dogs but also because some people get read of their dogs by just letting them go somewhere and that way the owner can be tracked....... it happened quite a lot in Italy where they used put microchips in dogs ears and then you'd find some idiots cutting it off so they couldn't be tracked .

As for tattooing.... we only tattoo pedigree dogs over here, so that wouldn't work for all the cross breeds......

Cutting off ears happens in racing greyhounds when the owners do not wish to be discovered "disposing" of their dogs

However it does not tend to happen in pets as usually they are stolen either to sell on or to be held to ransom, no one is going to be interested in paying for a one eared dog...............

In the UK crossbreeds etc can be tattood so can cats......

Ours was done through our local council. it was £15 and im in a london borough

I have found the Dog Warden department in a London borough ( not mine but close to me ) that do it for £15.

I'll check with my Vet on Monday if £45 does included a check up, I think I'm going to tell him what other places charge if it does actually cost £45.
