Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Frozen Veg?
- By ChinaBlue [gb] Date 06.02.06 22:32 UTC
As frozen vegetables are meant to be as nutritious as fresh (well almost) for us humans, would it be the same for dogs. For example to feed a mixed frozen vegetable (cauli, carrot, peas, beans), lightly cooked as per the instructions with their meal? It just seems a really convenient way to add vegetables, rather than buy one or two types.

I steam cook frozen veg then mix them in the blender, I don't see as it makes a difference whether fresh or frozen as long as you get the right mix I suppose (but don't ask me what that is :P ) never given mixed veg just broccolli, cauli, spinach. not saying you can't give beans or peas though :) Maybe someone can help with the right mix of vitamins, calcium, iron etc that veg gives

Dogs are unable to extract the nutrition from veggies unless the cell walls are broken down either by freezing or crushing ie in a blender.

Whether they are cooked or not is up to you, obviously some vitamins and minerals are destroyed by cooking/heat.

There is no reason not to feed a mix of vegetables.

As with anything excessive consumption of some veggies could pose potential problems ie some are high in oxalic acid, cruciferous veggies need to be fed in moderation and if you have a dog that suffers from arthritis it is often recommended that you avoid veggies from the nightshade family.

I personally never feed potatoes and onions should be avoided for health reasons as well.

Some people pulverise a load of veggies and then freeze in ice cube trays to add to meals, I am never that organised and just give what is in season/cheap/on offer generally. :)

So if the veg is frozen, the cell walls have been broken down enough to allow the dogs to absorb the nutrition? Would you need then to liquidise? Just mine seem to prefer the whole veg, rather than a gloop!

Where can I find out what a good balance of veg is, and what should be avoided and why? I am talking about adding about a dessertspoon full to each meal twice a day (dogs are GSD's). Any other advice please?

Thanks

You do not need to freeze AND liquidise, one or the other will do.  I generally mix my veggie puree in with the meat etc so it unnoticeable.

The only thing you need to avoid is onions, if you are only adding a dessertspoon to each meal, you cannot really OD on anything.
