Hi, Until yesterday i thought the worse smell that there was for charlie to roll in was fox poo.............. i was wrong! On my other halfs  morning walk with him he ran off to the middle of our local field and started rolling around and wouldn't come when called, so OH went off to see what he was rolling in and it was a DEAD FISH. OMG seriously it was repolsive.
OH threw up when he got home from the walk because of the smell and i walked in from being out the night before and the whole house stinks! I washed him immediatley but he still smells. i have had guests round today and have had to warn them before entering. total nightmare!
What is the worse thing your dog has ever rolled in?
- By Soli Date 05.02.06 18:16 UTC
Oh my gods thats nasty
The worst thing is when they're so bad you have to stick them in the bath and the warm steam permeates the smell through your house.  Lovely LOL

Camel poo. Honestly. There had been a circus visiting where I used to walk.
- By frizbe [gb] Date 05.02.06 18:29 UTC
Camel poo.. ha ha, hopefully i won't have the pleasure of that one.
- By onetwothree [gb] Date 05.02.06 19:28 UTC
Is camel poo even worse than fox poo, Goldmali?  I don't think I've had the pleasure of meeting it...
- By Goldmali Date 05.02.06 23:06 UTC
Haven't encountered fox poo I THINK (have come across dogs rolling in unidentified poo in the woods, could have been anything, LOL) but the camel poo was pretty bad indeed.............
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 05.02.06 18:18 UTC
It's got to be a to be a toss-up between the dead rat and the dead snake. I think on the balance the rat was worse.
- By JenP Date 05.02.06 18:21 UTC
I thought the worse was dead fox (the dead fish wasn't as bad), but that was until one rolled in human excrement !!! :(
- By supervizsla Date 05.02.06 18:24 UTC
dead fish is def the worse my two have rolled in (tho i haven't had the pleasure of camel ;) LOL) and the smell on their coats was horrible and even after 3 washes i was sure i could still smell it :(
- By Lyssa [gb] Date 05.02.06 18:32 UTC
Not come across a dead fish yet!  Hope that I don't I can imagine it would be absolutely repulsive, my worst so far has been a dead rat, the smell of that was awful. I must admit, I once had a bitch who would constantly roll in other dogs runny poo, she would cover herself in it. She spent most of her life in the shower!!!

Dead Hedgehog - complete with quills

I was 15 and very proud of my Tibetan Terrier who had just been bathed and brushed out by moi :)  took him for a walk (they say pride comes before a fall  )  and he looked fab, long white and silver coat, moving with style :) 'till he found the weeks old dead hedgehog on the rough ground we were walking.  Seriously, you could smell it for about 30 yards   and he runs straight up and dives in it  :( and rolls like crazy.  By the time I got to him he was well covered with stinky mess and liberally adorned with hedgehog quills   I had to pick the darn things out before they could work into his skin   I had to pick right thru his coat before bathing him to make sure neither of us got pierced  Must have taken 15 baths before the smell went

one of mine has done this frizbe. She stole it from a fisherman, who was apparently using it as bait (?) and proceeded to roll in it. Not nice. She went straight in the river after though, so she hardly smelt when we got home, which was a good job. The worst i've had was fox poo. The smell lingered for days dspite two baths (didn't have any tomato sauce, so it was bog standard dog shampoo). It was up my nails, all over my coat cuff and sleeve....legs.......... That was manky.

edited to say: when my youngest was a baby, he found a rotting grouse  or something similar, and decided to run off with it, chomp it, then roll. That was equally manky.

Some unidentifiable decomposing bird carcass fished from the bottom of a stagnant pond in high summer   The stench was utterly indescribable and we had to put him in the car to get him home so it stank to high heaven too
- By Anwen [gb] Date 05.02.06 21:07 UTC
Worst smell - yesterday
My beautiful girl rolled in a dead badger - and Ido mean in not on - it was that decomposed. She thenpoceeded to tear a limb off it ready to eat. As I wrestled with her to get her prize away from her, she managed to "wipe" it all over my trousers. Don't know which of us smelled worse
Dead fish is a close 2nd though - we had to drive 30 miles home with that smell :rolleyes:

Have not had the pleasure yet. My dog is 8 months old and so far so good. But being a Springer, and all the Springers i know roll in all sorts, l know it's coming. I would just like to ask you why do they do this?
- By Anwen [gb] Date 05.02.06 23:03 UTC
Because they can :D
- By bevb [in] Date 06.02.06 12:23 UTC
Mine don't roll in anything they damn well eat it, disgusting creatures and then make themselves ill
That fish would have been swallowed in seconds just like fox poo and any other disgusting thing they come accross.

Somebody told me that they roll in bad smelling stuff like the fox poo to cover there own scent, so they can sneak up on there prey when hunting without being smelt first. My dog rolled in poo which I think must have been foxes and I had no idea any poo smelt that bad it was disgusting!!!:eek::eek:
- By Carla Date 06.02.06 23:41 UTC
:D If I were prey and I smelt fox poo coming towards me I would run for my life :D :D :D

I'm from California and we have a lot of skunks. They do a very good job of stinking up your dogs when they're alive - rollin in dead, decomposing skunks makes them really smell sweet! I had to bathe them in tomato juice to get the smell out.
- By Jetstone Jewel [ca] Date 06.02.06 14:58 UTC
Dead fish, dead frogs, dead and unidentifiable, fresh cow dung, fresh horse buns (well, no, I used to be a horsey person so this one comes close to actually being pleasant), skunk spray, in my opinion none of them is as bad as human excrement.  Ugh, yech, peeuw, gag, retch.
- By spellmaker [gb] Date 06.02.06 15:40 UTC
I,ve never had to use it but I,ve heard rubbing tomato ketchup on bad smells helps to take the pong away.
The worst we,ve had so far is sheep poo and cow poo but they are probably famous last words.

>they roll in bad smelling stuff like the fox poo to cover there own scent, so they can sneak up on there prey when hunting without being smelt first

I don't understand that explanation.  Foxes are predators too so the prey would be just a likely to jump to attention at fox poo as dog's normal body odour wouldn't they?
- By Lily Mc [gb] Date 06.02.06 23:33 UTC
Have fortunately not had to try this out, but bizarrely enough tomato ketchup is meant to be very good at removing such smells.

Hope your dog isn't a Bichon, you'll have the RSPCA round ...

M.

Read the post properly, Marina, just noticed a couple of others have mentioned this.
- By Anwen [gb] Date 07.02.06 08:17 UTC
I've tried it and it does work. Lovely job!
- By roz [gb] Date 07.02.06 10:56 UTC
I thought fox poo was bad but yesterday Nips discovered the delights (?!) of duck poo. And the poo of a liberally incontinent duck it was too...;)
- By molezak [gb] Date 07.02.06 13:06 UTC
Yep!  Dead badger is a particular favourite to coat oneself in after a delicious meal of ideally cat poo or copious amounts of calf sick!!  eergghh!!!!
- By Lior [gb] Date 07.02.06 13:36 UTC
Dead Dingo, Dead Kangaroos and fisholine.

Fisholine is a product used to prevent rusting of metallic boat parts - my father had a large 10 litre bottle of it in his boat shed and my GSD decided to get in there and chew the lid off. She then rolled in it. WORST SMELL EVER.

It was like she had rolled in hundereds of dead, rotten fish with a liberal smattering of rotten meat as well.

Nothing got it out. We eventually had to learn to deal with it untill the smell dissapated naturally - about 6 weeks later.
