Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Naturediet feeding quantities

Hi,

I've not long changed my pup over to Naturediet and things have been fine. He's a CKCS, 22 weeks, weighing 5.5kg.  I am aware that ND's feeding guidlines are very generous so instead of feeding 1.5 packs of puppy diet per day as reccomended, I've been feeding 1 pack. Yesterday however, we had a very strange poo:eek:Sorry to be so graphic but it was semi solid and wrapped in a white mucus - never seen one like that before. Since then, I have cut his food down to 3/4 of a pack per day and his poo is normal again. I know every dog is different and will require different amounts but I wondered how much other people feed in comparison with ND's guidlines so that I can get a rough idea whether or not I am feeding enough - he would eat 2 packs per day if I allowed him!!!

Thanks in advance

Hayley

Hi

My dogs are way bigger than yours :) but I found with ND that it is pretty safe to start with half the recommended quantities and judge how your dog is doing from there. If he still seems ravenous after a meal then gradually increase the amounts a spoonful at a time until you hit the right quantity. Similarly, if he's leaving any (unlikely judging by what you've said about Harvey ;) ) then reduce the amount slightly. Remember to take into account any 'extras' he gets throughout the day as training treats, titbits etc. If you can feel, but not see, his ribs then you're pretty much spot on :)

Hayley the weird poo might not be related to the ND amounts - it could just be that he managed to eat something strange when you weren't looking, or perhaps he just had an upset tum.

I'm a bit paranoid about overfeeding because when I tried ND at 12 weeks, I gave a full pack per day as the feeding guidelines suggested and made Harvey really poorly:mad: (obviously, he's now 10 weeks older and so will now require more). He seems fine on 3/4 pack but I will try adding the extra 1/4 pack and see if it starts again.....that way I'm sure to know if overfeeding is the problem. Eating nasty things behind my back could be the problem - last week he managed to find some baked beans in the grass at the park:rolleyes:
