As i know nothing about breeding i thought i would post here on behalf of a friend and see if i can get any help/advice.
I have a friend that has a BC female that has not been spayed. She only has the one dog and when its in season she keeps it in and away from all other dogs. She is very responsible and a good dog owner. Her dog has just been in season and whilst the dog was in the garden another male jumped the fence and got to her.My friend went running straight out and caught the other dog, dragged it away and bought her dog inside. They didnt lock but now my freind is worried her dog may be pregnant. Can a female get pregnant if the male does not lock on?

Yes, slip matings can and do result in puppies. Your friend's best bet is to take her bitch to the vet for the termination injection. However this often brings a bitch back into season again, so she'd have to keep the bitch confined for another four weeks. Alternatively she could have the bitch spayed now - not ideal, but better than an unwanted litter.

Your post emphasises the importance of not leaving an in-season bitch unattended out of doors - very few gardens are truly safe, even though we may think they are.

Hi,
The answer is yes!!
The vet can give an injection to stop her concieving.

I think the more modern injections don't bring the bitch back into season again, at least it didn't with my experience of having Mia injected.   They are a lot more safe than they used to be.

Thanks alot for the advice.I will be speaking to my friend this evening and i will tell her about the injection. Is it a high proability of her dog being pregnant or less than it would be if there was a lock between them? I have just been doing a bit of research about puppies and was shocked to see that a dog was only preganat for 9 weeks :eek:I will keep you posted on the news and her dissision.Thanks. :)
