I was wondering what trends any of  you have noticed recently in demand for different breeds of dog.  In my local paper there has been loads of ads for tibetian spaniels and tibetian terriers recently and hardly any for staffies which is very unusual.  For a while there was a lot of mastiff type breeds but again supply of them (or demand for them?) appears to be decreasing.  I live on the east coast of Scotland but what trends has anyone else noticed in their area?

I'm really surprised re. Tibetan Spaniels as I've never seen them advertised.

Staffies here in Manchester are the most popular adverts I'd say oh and Lab#s.

Lab's and Bc's are the most popular here but then I do live in cornwall! Mastiffs are coming up lots though but lots of them are cross bred ones.

I saw an ad for Tibetan Spaniels in the local free ads this week. The advert actually said something along the lines of '...opportunity to own a rare breed...'

The breed I have seen most frequently advertised recently is the Rottie. The free ads have been full of ads for Rotties of all ages but mostly adolescent ones (i wonder why that might be ) and a couple of ads have specified that they must go to homes with no children :( Ads for Bulldogs seem to be on the increase too but I have seen ads for pups selling for £400 (no KC reg mentioned) which seems awfully cheap for a bulldog...I can only imagine as to their quality (or lack thereof).

Siberian Huskies! I've never seen any in all my life in this area, but in the last 12 months I've got to know at least two local dogs quite well and there also seems to be more and more ads in the Loot etc... for them.

About a year ago I started to notice a real increase in Husky pups when out and about locally but I never see adult ones now. I wonder where they all went  My boy regularly has a run with two Husky X Lab brothers from the same (accidental) litter. Lovely dogs but the perfect example of the unpredictability of cross-breeding. One is entirely yellow coloured but built exactly as a Husky should be, the other is the Lab shaped with Husky markings!!

I've also noticed ads for 'wolf look alike' GSD X's, presumably for those who want a husky/wolf type dog that might be easier to look after than a true husky/mal/wolf and a lot cheaper than a pure bred dog.

Ridgebacks, ridgebacks and more ridgebacks, closely followed by Staffies and Labs.
- By LucyD [gb] Date 04.02.06 17:36 UTC
Don't know about the ads, but in our park it's all Staffies, which is a problem as my 2 boys don't like them (no idea why, they've never been attacked by one!). Closely followed by Alsatians, and various other terrier types. Considering Cavaliers are supposed to be so popular, I hardly ever see any others in the park - perhaps they're all at home being lapdogs!! :-D

Down the road in Brighton staffies seem to rule the pavements! In Lewes, which is our nearest town, I see an ever increasing number of Westies. Out here in the wilds we're mainly divided between terriers and labs!

Hi all, in my area it's Staffies and there seems to be no end of ads for them.
Boxers seem to be coming a close second for people as well here, i haven't seen to many of them advertised but a lot of people seem to be getting Boxer pups.

The ads round here show an increasing preponderance for "designer" crossbreeds and ludicrous "miniaturisation". Plus ads for standard poodle studs for the creation of "oodles".

Staffys are the main breed here but are rapidly being caught up with the stafkita which the local troublemakers are breeding rapidly in a bid to get the most viscious and scary dog they can by crossing Staffs with Akitas.

We live in rural Cornwall and where we live there are alot of working dogs.Though i dont agree with it alot of people still go Rabbiting and take their dogs for that reason. That means there are alot of JRTs and ESSs.Theres also quite a few lurchers, maybe used for the same reason.People dont view their dogs as pets more as working dogs and many live outside in kennels. They all seem to be well looked after and very loved despite being outdoor dogs. :)

Lately there seem to be lots of DDB in our freeads, a few years ago when a friend wanted one you couldn't find them for love nor money.

I have been looking for a Tibetan Spaniel since last year, we went through the club and the KC, looked round the shows and breeders had only male puppies that would not fit in with my other dogs, we got our girl last Monday and that was only by luck as she came from the same breeders as my 10 year old TS.

We live in East Anglia and the most popular dogs are the Dogue de Bordeaux X Mastiff, and Akita X Sibe both very unstable X's

Over the last couple of weeks I've bumped into a few border terriers living quite near to me.  One was the cutest pup ever.  It's not a breed that I've seen around here apart from my own dog but it seems to be becoming quite popular.  It's usually staffies and big dogs that are the norm.

There was an ad. in the Loot this week for Teacup Chi's, can you even think of the price that they were asking??  Go on, I dare you too and we'll see who's the closest
- By roz [gb] Date 04.02.06 23:53 UTC
£1500?
- By spiritulist [in] Date 05.02.06 09:20 UTC
£1900??
- By supervizsla Date 05.02.06 09:31 UTC
2,200? :)
- By Emz77 [gb] Date 05.02.06 14:41 UTC
I too saw an ad on another well known website for pupz and the price was £2500  plus the dog was 12 weeks old.... but not sure if it is normal for a small breed to stay longer with mum??

Yes, toy breeds are very tiny and fragile as puppies so homing at 12 weeks is quite normal. :)

To my surprise and disappointment (being a Chi owner myself) there seem to be many people out there trying to breed Chihuahuas as apparently there's a great demand for them. Breeding them in the first place is not a problem, problem occurs when you realize they breed all kinds of really bad examples of the breed and even cross them with Miniature Pinchers!
As for Tibetan Spaniels (definitely my favorite breed apart from Chis and Whippets), they are becoming very popular in my country, but so far (luckily) there are only really responsible breeders out there.....
- By chrisjack Date 05.02.06 12:09 UTC
staffies and boxers, then border collies and jrt's.
- By TansysMum [gb] Date 05.02.06 12:58 UTC
Down here on the sunny  coast of Kent it is Staffies, Staffies and more Staffies, but spaniels are also very popular.
- By Emz77 [gb] Date 05.02.06 14:43 UTC
I live on a housing estate with 3 gardens on mine (if you see what I mean) and every garden has a golden in it :-D the one behind us is especially gorgeous and Blade absolutely loves her. He has forever got his nose attached to hers
Forgot to say I am in Reading, there are alot of labs too and a few flatcoats.

I live in a medium sized town in the North East and to be honest can't say that there is any 1 dog that is more popular than the others (at the moment!).  On a daily basis I see mostly labs, staffies (usually an older dog waddling along with a little old man/woman ), boxers, terriers (westies, yorkies, borders), springers, greyhounds/lurchers, GSDs, BCs, goldies and cockers as well as cross breeds (mostly BC crosses) and mongrels.  I have noticed an increase in cavvies and rough collies over the past few months though.

Our local rescue at the back end of last year was 1/2 full of staffies, 1/4 full of greyhounds/lurchers and 1/4 of cross breeds/heinz 57s.  Then it went to being mostly full of retrievers (mainly labs)  It seems to me that people get these dogs as puppies, keep them for 12-18 months without socialising them adequately, then decide that not only has the novelty warn off but they also have a delinquent dog on their hands   In most cases this of course can be rectified with some persistant training but can they be bothered?  Can they heck!
