Does anyone know if you can store your own straws or do they have to be stored in a licenced facility by a recognised (to the kc) person?

Not on the KC site that I can see but you have to apply first via this form http://www.the-kennel-club.org.uk/forms/Form_2.pdf  for the actual AI & I think it would have to be witnessed by a third party & the dog id'd  for collection & the AI procedure Possibly by a vet or similar otherwise it would be open to abuse

Do you use AI on you cattle ? As you would need the storage facilities they would be the same for cattle I presume

The KC would be the ones to tell you & confirm in writing

hi, yes we have a nitrogen flask containg bull semen but you are not meant to mix species & the chap who tops the flask up said it wouldnt be allowed, although how they would know, i do not know!!! Could easily set up another nitro flas though, its not expensive. May have to ring the KC on this one!

I know David Morton stored straws for a lot of people when I was doing AI, but that was about 10 years ago so not sure what the procedure is now. Our local vet hospital also offered storage, which would have been fine to send to the states (and presumably for using here) but not for NZ who insisted on DM.
